Antifouling a stainless Steel prop and shaft?

Surely someone knows the answer?

Guess because there really is not a definitive answer. Most people do not put anything on their props and shaft. There are all sorts of possible treatment and some people find them successful and others don't. The basic problem is poor adhesion of any coating to the metal and the coating coming off because the components are whizzing round.

Personally I have had some success with lanolin on props and Trilux on saildrive housings and props, but never had an exposed stainless shaft.

If you want paint to really stick to stainless then prime with hammerite special metals primer. It is amazingly good at sticking and a good basis for top coat or antifoul. If left bare the barnies will sieze hard onto it. Oly put it on if you want it to stay on because it dont come off easliy. (not connected to hammerite except I bought a tin 5 years ago!) )

First year with new shaft and prop, I polished to mirror finish. Had to dive in August to clear horrendous growth and barnacles. Last year used Dr Barnacle and lasted all year with very little growth.

I,ve tried, lanolin, high polish and anti foul paint - all failed on my Gorin folder. Significant imbalance this year due growth (7 months moored & sailed frequently from Poole Harbour). So tempted to try Dr Barnacle seems well researched but little tested. It just seems obvious that grease will come off but that is not your experience I gather!
