Antifoul - the story so far...

Original recipe argument

Huh, well the Original Recipe was passed down to me from ooh, centuries ago by a small Moose.

I bort 20kg and mixed it into 7x 2.5 litre tins which is about a kilo a litre, ish.

Also, mine is *proven* whereas that snelson's recipie has caused holes in his hull within three weeks and he had to lift it out sharpish.

Re: Original recipe argument

Holes?? Cummon enlighten me!

Did you do this in UK or transport it back? I would like to give it a go. Especially if it lasts.

Re: Original recipe argument

You do not use the copper dust as an additive on aluminium casings, as it will destroy them with electroltytic action. Use chilli powder mixed in with Trilux.

It is always good practice to leave a 1.5cm gap around the drive legs by using masking tape when antifouling your hull. Especially so when using copper as an additive.

er copper dust, aluminium, electrolytic action ?

erm, has this been proven?

Plenty of different metals under my boat, but the anodes are bottom of the chain. I was promised all sorts of fizzing and bubbling with copper under there, but nothing. If all at same earth, no charge, no electrolysis?

Re: er copper dust, aluminium, electrolytic action ?

Not something I would want to take a chance on Matt. Someone else on this forum (can't remember who) did in fact get onto his boat one day to find the drive leg had all but vanished.

Anyway, you don't have ali legs, but you may have bronze props, so you have to watch out for them going a lovely shade of salmon pink. It look great, but it means the zinc content has been leached out of the bronze leaving the copper behind and a very much weaker propellor!

Sorry if that amounts to granny & eggs /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Original recipe argument

Phew! But might give oit a go in a couple of years, next time I antifoul.

Re: er copper dust, aluminium, electrolytic action ?

i will keep an eye out for it.

incidentally, i also fitted a galvanic isolator cos cnexcted to shorepower a fair bit. Probably not wortth it if you aren't cnected much, otherwise £50 tops.
