I was at London Yacht Centre last December purchasing charts, and looked at a pair of Binoculars with a compass. A shop assistant told me if I purchased them that day he would give me a very special discount from the RRP, unrepeatable anywhere else.So I bought them. I went to the Boat Show with a view to purchasing a GPS from them when I realised that the same binoculars were on sale all over the show at £20-30 less than I paid for them. I complained to LYC on the grounds that I was regular customer, and trusted their advice. They were unmoved. I asked for a discount on the GPS I wanted which would give them a sale, smooth my ego, and retain an old customer. They declined.
Just as well because the GPS I wanted was aslo much cheaper elsewhere.
So half price anti-foul? Caveat Emptor!
There are some stores that I go back to again and again. It's only when you have a problem that you realise customer loyalty doesn't mean a thing. I'm sure most of us have our own black list of stores (not just chandlers). Equally, there are some stores where the individual makes all the difference. Ultimately, it is the power of the consumer that forces stores to maintain standards. So time to name and shame...
