Antifoul solution for props

Can anyone tell me what's the best thing to use to stop growth on a prop?

I've seen specialist antifouling for the purpose, any cheaper remedies?

Regards

I've said this on some other threads, but it depends on how fast your props turn, fast turning, it wont work, Black lead, used for old fireplaces and stoves, it must be the real stuff, put it on with a cloth and polish it, keep putting it on and polishing it till your arm gets too tired, hey presto black props and nothing likes lead! Alternatively, hard racing antifoul, used sparingly and polished. For high speed props, 1800 and up rpm, forget it nothing will stay on! You'll just have to polish them! People say vaseline, I wonder how long vaseline will stay on, Hmmm!

I tried lanoline last year and it looks good - very little growth which scraped off easily. Much stickier than vaseline, available from pharmacists @ £6 per large pot. Just dab it on thickly with a brush. Also useful to stop SS screws corroding into aluminium.

I've tried various A/F paints which were useless.

I dont know the Zebo stuff, but up in darkest lancashire we can get the stuff easily, but it is grate polish, but you need to look at the contents, more lead, more effective! Yes, it is hard work! Lanoline sounds interesting and I have some onboard for my rigging bottle screws. I like the black lead though. But lanoline sounds a lot easier, being organic, I wonder if it won't feed the organisms in the Meddy!

Way back last year, there was this same theme going on this site.

If I remember correctly, there was some adverse comments concerning the use of black lead to do with galvanic corrosion. I'll do a search and see if I can find it.

But here are some others who have used it to no adverse effect.

Philip

Will black lead work on my cast iron keel? Just pulled my boat out and cleaned it up. It has cast iron centre keel and steel(?) bilge plates. I don't know what the previous owner used, but suspect it was a long, long time ago! The thickness of junk that came off was unbelievable. Layer upon layer of red, blue, black and now what looks like red gloss. All ideas gratefully received.

Read some time back in PBO (I think) that lanolin is used extensively and effectively in NZ. A year or so back I covered my prop in axle grease to stop anyone even thinking of nicking it. Before launching I wiped the excess off with a rag, this by accident proved to be very effective at stopping the usual growth on the prop, even though it revolves at anything up to 1600+ rpm. I will be doing the same again this year, last year did nothing and had constant growth all seaon.

I don't know, but I think straight antifouling would probably be best, do your bilge plates have anodes? I've only ever used black lead on props. I was told about the black lead thing years ago by some old guys in Norfolk, I've used it ever since, so does my brother. Also black lead needs to be on a smooth surface, I always polish, roughly, my props first.

It's not cheap but VC Offshore spray works a treat on my aluminium prop. You'll need to use VC's primer if it's going onto bare aluminium. Great stuff for log paddle wheels as well.
