Is it correct that antifoul should be put on within so many days of the boat being put back in the water or it doesn't work properly?

Depends on the AF, all the manufacturers give pretty good guidance on this, either on website or tin.

For Cruiser Uno for example max. immersion times are as follows:
5-15°C - 3 mths; 23°C - 2 mths; 35°C - 1 mth
For Micron Extra max. immersion time : 5-35°C - 12 months

Thanks for that, with the cost of AF its best to get it right.I think the 3 mths will be ok for the winters we get.

The manufacturers reccommended immersion times are fine providing you dont launch to coincide with either the first barnacle spat seeding or "slime bloom"
These nasties arrive in such vast numbers they will have either glued themselves onto, or formed a mat of, dead cells which will stop the biocides from reaching them and killing them off.
Most A/F rely on moisture entering/softening the coating layer allowing the biocide to flood to the surface, or slough off, and destroy these forms of marine life, however, if the coating is case hardened by time it will slow down the effectiveness of the A/F allowing marine growth to get established.
Another cause for poor A/F results can be because of water surface contamination (oil or the like) at the time of launching, this coats the entire U/W area as the boat is lowered into the water and acts like a coat of "food" for these insatiable forms of life and when once established, they are difficult to kill off, antifouling or no antifouling
Remember to totally remove barnacle stools AND adhesive as it contains a hormone which attracts barnacles!!
