On the basis that antifoul self erodes, if I put 2 coats of Cruiser Uno on, is it likely to last 2 years, or might I be better putting 4 coats of something cheaper like Jotun Sea Guardian, (used to use Jotun on ships when I worked for a shipping line 25 years ago).

I prefer the idea of Cruiser Uno 'cause this is on already, and 2 coats for 2 years would be nice.

Cheers

Richard as nobody else has answered I’ll try.

All anti fouls behave differently in different waters.
There is no way of saying that two coats will last two years, in fact most people put two coats on a year anyway. It will depend on how often you use the boat and how fast she goes.
In short, the answer to this is……………………“Try it”

Ships put 5 coats on every 5 years, however they get annual underwater inspections/ anode replacement etc, and the cost of haulage and operational down time is more than a pleasure boat.

2 years is an approximate time set for the application of 2 coats. The paint companies sell more paint and associated products for a 2 year system, but it is also a decent ammount of time for inspection of anodes, props, cracks, osmosis etc, where professional underwater inspections are too costly.

This is the official answer from a paint manufacturing company,

There are two elements to this.

The main mechanic behind a/f is for the chemicals (such that remain in modern coatings) leech out of an open matrix of the paint carrier.

Clearly therefore the surface has a lower concentration of agents than lower layers.

Secondly, the surface gradually erodes, thus releasing more of the agents from within the matrix.

Biggest problem I have noticed is that if you use your yacht regularly, the mechanism seems to work, if you suffer sparodic use you will need to help the process by an occasional 'scrub'. I dry out and use a large nylon scourer which removes the weed and a layer of a/f. Then effectivenes (such as it is) returns for a while.

This has the secondary benefit of helping to reduce build up of coatings.
