I'm currently coming to the end of a year's free trial of Computer Associates' anti virus and firewall. not impressed enough to pay to keep using it so looking for another freebie. any suggestions?
I also had free one-year trial of CA's e-trust. The virus checker seemed OK but didn't get particularly good rating in several recent computer mags. Didn't like the FireWall (get McAfee free from AOL anyway).
Previously used ANTIVIR which is completely free and frequently updated (google it). Will probably go back to it when a 3-month trial of F-Secure (excellent) comes to an end.
Try this as well as AVG, my wife’s computer at home had been slow and all the other scanners including a paid for Norton said clean – but Trend with their Housecall found “Trojan Horse” and we killed it. Big bit of kit to get rid of in the garden mind!
Avast usually comes out best in comparative studies compared to Trend, though I only being trying it for a couple of weeks so far, so cannot give full endorsement yet, but does seem to be superior to Trend which I've used in past
Avast for me, low overhead and daily updates, using it for well over a year now and no funnies on the system. Also Zone Alarm for the firewall.
If you must use IE the go to www.spywareinfo.com and download the free stuff to stop the Malware.
Available in full AV + Firwall versions ...... even if you don't pay for another years updates - you can still download manually from their site ....
There are various 'free' av pacakges out there .... AVG for example - but I feel you get what you pay for .... had one of our office machines on AVG free .... it was infected within a week and we had to clean it out and install a paid system .... Kaspersky - that sorted men from the boys !!
Mcafee on the others remained clean .....
They also produce a standalone cleaner / detector called Stinger ...... well worth the download .... which is updated regularly .......
Norton - the number of users that I know that have fallen to virus with Norton installed .... regardless of updates etc .... I am amazed that it is still available, but of course like the new notebook I bought recently - Norton was supplied with it ...... needless to say its in the drawer - never to be installed.
AVG let one of my machines get infected ......... had to clean it with Mcfee's Stinger and then a colleague of mine installed Kaspersky - before I put Mcafee ..... so for me Mcafee or Kaspersky ..................
AVG is excellent and will keep itself up to date. In addition to an anti virus you should think about a firewall like zonealarm (also free download) and a spyware programme too. I use spysweeper. With these three installed I have never been infected but I am often shocked about the number of things they stop! God help the unprotected!
I would guess this was some time ago. AVG now have a brand new version (Jan 2005) which is much better. The problem with previous issues is they were not updated fast enough to stop recent viruses. Nothing wrong with stinger or Kaspersky, but I now believe AVG to be superior. Updates daily automatically.
I use Zone Alarm Pro and no AV at all! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Zone Alarm scans e-mails and to date has blocked any virus / worm laden e-mails.
I have used McAfee Stinger (free exe) to remove viruses and worms from other peeps PCs.. which it seems to do very effectively.
Go to Grisoft and install the Free version for home use, it'll check for updates everytime you boot up. Our webmaster recommended it to me, and I've been very happy with it.
Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus System: AVG passed Virus Bulletin's June 2003 VB100 Windows XP test (the most recent available at press time) after failing previous attempts; it also passed ICSA's June 2003 test. AVG includes memory-resident scanners, plus e-mail scanners for Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, and Exchange client.
Alwil's Avast 4 Home Edition: Avast likewise passed both the VB100 and ICSA tests, and it offers memory-resident scanning. But Avast surpasses AVG by scanning both Outlook and standard Internet (POP3/SMTP) mail, making it a good choice if you use a non-Microsoft mail client. Amazingly, Alwil also offers support via e-mail for its free product.
