Good evening:

Twenty some years ago I painted my deck with DGK Anti-skid paint and was very happy with it however like a lot of things it eventually came time to re-paint the deck.

I contracted with a local company to re-paint both the hull and deck and was very unhappy with the result as far as the deck was concerned.

I had a friend bring me a number of cans of the DGK Anti-skid from Rhodes and very unwisely applied it over the existing paint after giving it a good scrub down. It was great for a time but eventually began flaking off making the deck an unsightly mess.

I have now contracted with another company to repaint the deck and he has suggested using Inter-deck paint which is a polyurethane paint. I am concerned that this will not provide the non-slip surface I want and as I have three cans of DGK Anti-skid paint left from my earlier exercise I wonder if it would be possible to mix the two paints together. DGK Anti-skid is also a polyurethane paint.

I have e-mailed the maker of DGK Anti-skid but have not had a reply and as D Day is approaching am becoming worried.

I wonder if any member has any experience with these paints or comments on my plan?

Cheers

P.S. have just checked the specs and note that the painter suggests Awl Grip topcoat white paint. I presume this is the anti-skid paint as he has only listed 2 Ltrs whereas he has listed 5 litrs of the Inter-deck paint.

This month's PBO has a full article on various non-slip paints, including various additives to add to 'normal' paint.

I painted my Treadmaster decking with Interdeck two years ago and it has so far lasted well and a lot less cost than the Treadmaster paint, I first cleaned the treadmaster with hot soapy water then when dry 2 coats of Interdeck, will dry ok overnight but I followed TIP to not walk on it for 4 days to allow it to harden, no problems after that..

I used Interdeck as a quick fix without any primer in 2008 and so far so good, with only a couple of tiny patches flaked off with a pressure washer and the colour starting to show below in a small heavily used area. Will probably think of redoing it next year or the year after.

You can also get the Interdeck non-slip additive quite cheaply. A friend used that when spraying a two-part paint on his decks - not sure what paint he used but he bought it from a specialist auto paint supplier.

Good morning:

Am afraid that my main concern/question has been missed.

I wonder if the two different brands of polyurethane can be mixed ensuring I get some of the advantage of the extra grit contained in the DGK paint.

Still slightly avoiding the question, but Interdeck already has grit in it which is very effective - see the PBO report referred to earlier. The grit is avaialbe on its own if you want to add even more - however should not be necessary. It is sold separately so that you can add it to other colour paints should the standard Interdeck colours not be to your liking.

Try e-mailing International. I got a very quick response last time I had a question to ask.

Why using anti slip decking paint at all? why not use a non abrasive anti slip? this wouldn't need replacing as much and would do the job better, not to mention costing alot less.

One company I found who have a wide range of anti slip, who did a blog post recently writing about this exact thing.
