Anti-freeze ? Bukh dv10

Having heard it’s recommended to flush anti-freeze/fresh water, through the engine cooling system to minimise corrosion during lay-up...can you tell me please is there a method to do this when the boat is already out the water supported only in a cradle?

Done it last wk.
Stick plastic garden hose up the intake, should fit 0.5" intake neatly, fill wheely bin with water, open seacock run engine, ( dont stand behind exaust) when about 3gal of water in bin, stop engine, add 1-2ltr a/freeze start engine, run the lot through, then open raw water filter, drain off.

I do more or less the same as vyvcox. My variation is to have tube from impeller into bucket of water with another standing by just in case. The wee yanmar doesn't suck much up though. Run engine for minutes until outlet is well warmed up, then bung antifreeze in bucket at approx concentration and get that to come out the back. I've heard recommendations for unscrewwing bits and removing thermostat - maybe next year.

Did mine last week- I prefer to have a large bin filled with water/anti-freeze with a bit of hosepipe connected to the impeller inlet and laying in the bottom of the bucket.

I then run the yard hose with my sprayhead (from home)into the bucket so that it stays topped up- that way I don't run the risk of running water in under pressure if the engine is slow to start or when it has stopped.

I just make sure that the engine is hot and the thermostat open therefore, to divert the water into the block and not just squirt it out throught the top of the engine/thermostat housing. It is then I add the anti-freeze of course

The only problem is that not much circulates round the block and manifold until the thermostatt opens, which is marked by anoticeasble increase in water temperetaure coming out of the exhaist and possibly steaming. This is why some people remove the thermostat first.
A solution is to simply run the engine (with water circulating of course) until it is clear that the thermostat has opened.

As a novice I initially worried that I could not run the engine with the boat in the cradle, stress etc, after much head scratching and some of my own experimentation..I discovered that if I turned the alternator with a huge wrench the impellor turned…. brilliant!.. I thought… I have the solution, but what the heck I will ask anyway..
So you guys have probably saved me at least a week of constant wrench turning, never mind how exhausting it would have been to then turn it fast enough to get the engine temperature high enough for the thermostat to open!..

If the block is first drained by removing the bolt on the side (in the case of the DV10), is it still necessary have an open thermostat? I think the block will fill up as soon as you start sucking up water.

could be ? hopefully someone will be kind enough to advise us.. for my part i now hope to (try) remove the thermostat i can see it's cover!..have a look at it..give it a scrub..leave it out while putting the cover back..i'm guessing.. then move in with the hose and wheelie bin..hopefully I can then just run the engine for the shortest time..at least thats the plan..i will look for this bolt you mention as well, any pointers on its location?.. i will be happily surprised if its accessible/even visible on my boat but certainly sounds worth a look, thanks

Standing in front of the fly wheel it's on the right hand side about two thirds the way down the block. The dip stick pipe makes it akward to get a spanner or socket in there. If you undo it the water will pour out and the block will then by empty and ready to be filled with your antifreeze mix.

Don't forget to put the bolt back

On the DV 20 which is basically the same. I drain down the block, remove the thermosat, remove the rubber pipe from the outlet side of the water pump. I then fill the engine with antifreeze solution 25%, filling it through the Rubber pipe that was on the pump and also from the thermostat housing, you can see when its full, This way you do not need to run the engine.
