We are new arrivals in Sanremo close to the border with France.
Can anyone recommend a company or person that could do our anti-fouling?
I'm sure there are plenty of places along the French or Italian coast that could do the job but, I would feel more comfortable hearing from someone who can recommend a person or company.
15 m motorboat.
Thank you,
Andy

Andy,

We are in Beaulieu and have used both Monaco Marine and Chantier Naval at St Jean. Both good and prompt. SammyB on here used to use to go to San Reno for engine services and might be helpful if you pm her.

I hope you have a lovely season ahead.

Ask where you are in the yard or in one of the many boat agents in the marina .
You will be mad moving from San R to SoF ---
One of the attractions of a IT marina is the lower overall running costs like AF and yardage .
Or DIY it's cheap and easy to do ,pretty low skilled if you have the time ?

Why do you want not to have it done in SanR ?

Who looks after your boat ?

Hi mcanderson, thank you for the info I'll call both of them and have a chat. And yes, I saw SammyB being mentioned as a fan of Sanremo, I did try PM ing, but, no reply.
Have a great season yourself!
I love Beaulieu, Myself and my wife did our initial boat training there.

Hi Jimmy, thank you for the reply I'll call De Stefano a call.. is Any chance of PM ing me De Stefano,s phone number, I have tried to look up the number but no luck.

Hi Portofino,
I am slightly mad, I think owning a boat qualifies me for that accolade.

Thank you for information it is helpful and exactly what I want to hear.
Nothing would please me more than to have any work carried out in Sanremo but, I am looking for a bit reassurance as I do not know anyone here.
I have recently arrived from Spain and it took a couple of years there to work out just who you could trust to do a good job.

Thank you for mentioning the DIY route. That was another question I was planning to ask.
More than few Marinas will not allow you to work on your own boat either for health & safety reasons or to protect the jobs of the local people.
Is that not the case in Sanremo.

And right now I look after my boat.
Do I need to have someone to look after my boat in Sanremo?

Is there a public so to speak lift over @ the W of the site ,in the other marina .
I presume you are in the bigger Porto Solo (sp?) E as you enter?

Wasn,t aware of any closed shop @Porto Solo yard .I have been in that Yard --- Hull spotting :) ( much to the annoyance of some forumites) .

Anyhow it's low ish tech stuff AF and as they say "when in Rome -----) --- just if I was in your boat shoes in SR I would start to establish local conections .
Boats being boats as soon as its launched all nice and AF,d -- few weeks later summit will not work /bust /leak-etc
That's when you need local fixers or a net work .

Interestingly -after your enquiries- I don,t supose you could indicate if there is a worth while difference in price for the same job ---
SoF Vs San Remo ?

Nice place SR btw

Just to reinforce Portofino's comments, we built a network of locals when we arrived in Beaulieu. This has been great as we spend more time with the locals than with expats and they are always keen to help us out. Time spent here will not be wasted. I wouldn't mind doing the antifouling on our boat, but the time factor is against me so I pay for Auquamarine in Beaulieu to sort it all out. They are great and a very helpful bunch.

I have emailed SammyB about your posts and hopefully she will be in touch.

I think trustworthy is the operative word in France ... you do have to do some research if you can ... ask me how I know! There are those who'll rip you off for a pastime when they realise you're foreign ... they don't think ahead do they! I'm only on my second company, having been ripped off last year, but think they're OK having asked around several locals and checked owners with people actually working on the boats at the time.
Where you have to watch out is when they quote for a coat of Primocon and two coats of Interspeed and all you get is one coat of something cheap! I'm coming out next week but will make several trips to the boat to keep an eye on things!

Hi Portofino, I'll let you know the prices when I get some quotes. So far no one has volunteered what they are paying for anti-fouling and it seems rude to ask.
PM me sometime and I'll invite you over to the Sanremo side for a beer. Cheers Andy

Trustworthy is a good operative word everywhere. Which is why I'm asking around to see who is good and who should be avoided and trying to build up a picture in my boats new home at Sanremo.
My first year of boating was in Port Ginesta, Spain. My boat was looked after by a recommended husband and wife team and the whole experience was bad enough to consider giving up boating. They were nice people and the quality of work was ok but, they would set a date for maintenance and just not turn up or disappear with a part from the engine leaving me boat I couldn't move. The whole season was an exercise in trying to catch them and pin them to boat until the job was finished.
The next year I went to Port Vell and asked around and did the research as you suggest. The result was a fantastic service from people that had done work on their own boats. And I never want to be in the situation that I was in Ginesta.

Just the same in France! Maybe it's a Mediterranean thing? Maybe it's just a general apathy with small businesses ... they do enough to keep them in funds for the week/month and no more! Actually, come to think of it, I used to know one or two in the UK like that as well!

Hi mcanderson, thank you for the info I'll call both of them and have a chat. And yes, I saw SammyB being mentioned as a fan of Sanremo, I did try PM ing, but, no reply. .
I did send you a reply but was using my tablet rather than laptop and I'm in India so maybe it didn't get through!
We used the Volvo agents there for our first service on a previous boat we were very happy with their work.
Best idea would be to ask them who they recommend. The Volvo service office is about halfway along the marina parade of shops in a chandlery(don't have name with me)
Another option is to ask in the Marina office they are so helpful.
If you would like any other info pm me your email address

There's no need to cruise 30 miles down the coast to have some hull paint slapped on with a roller. It's just antifouling, you could train a chimp to do it. I'd get quotes from the two yards in san remo and pick the cheapest.

Hi Nick, the problem is if you are not standing behind the chimps they would slap one coat of any old crap they have lying around and if the surface is not prepared the anti-fouling will come off and a couple of months later you will have a fouled hull. So finding someone you can trust At least by recommendation is important. Also around boats you often get asked to hand over your cheque book and don't ask stupid questions.

I think you are being a bit over cautious here ,If that attitude of distrust and "control " is detected by a busy ( cos he's recommended ) "anti fouler " --- then he will ramp up the quote ,politely and hoping -that you take (what he perceives a hassle customer ) your buisness else where .

Ask some of the other 100 ,s of marina users which of the two yards they use .
Surley you have met your neighbours .

Alternatively DIY if it's a "chimps " job .
At least 1st time if you are not in the DIY camp try one of the local yards -just can,t see the big one at the end doing a bad job they looked very professional and organised last time I had a look round a lot of very big stuff around 100 ft out being worked on .
