Anti-fouling. Brush or roller?

waddya mean WE, im billy no mates come fit out time.

:)

Antifouling was traditionally the one boat job my parents helped with (actually mum has done some cleaning from time to time too) to make themselves feel like proper boat owners :D. Only the painting on, though, never the rubbing down or (when needed) the priming. I got to do those bits on my own.

never looked that close but 7 or 9" as to mohair or foam i couldnt say

i used the narrower roller on my 26 footer but since moving up to 33 foot, the wider roller is the only job. Bigger roller does soak up more paint - I find I am using 5 ltrs now but it does not make the roller too heavy to use.

i have used a 7" roller on a pole for at least 26 yrs & would not consider smaller as one cant maintain a "wet edge"

is that like triggers broom.:D

My yacht is 41' LOA, long fin and skeg, deep forefoot, encapsulated keel i.e. quite a bit of hull to paint. I use a 9" roller, emulsion type, medium pile. The actual painting took about 45 minutes per side, roller loaded heavily, no skimping, no pole. I like to get in close to the hull and see the thickness of paint going on, no splatter either. Double thickness of paint, two roller widths wide at leading and trailing edges: bow, keel, skeg, fin and stern.

Preparation consists of scrubbing the old anti fouling paint with a Green 3M Scotch Bright Hand Pad (the ones about 2 - 3 cm thick) used wet. I get a good base of old anti fouling to apply the new paint too. Loose anti fouling is scraped off and new undercoat applied on these areas. I get two seasons with Cruiser Uno.

Just for interest a neighbour has not anti fouled this year, he just scrubbed the old with the Scotch Brite and relaunched claiming this is good enough every odd year. Perhaps it is but it should be noted that this yacht is chartered regularly.

+2 - short radiator roller, long handle. Importantly, use a short pile roller - the Harris Varnish ones are best. The foam type dissolve in some antifoul, and the long pile ones shed hairs.
