For information.

I bought some cheap International anti-foul at a boat jumble last year. It was completely non effective whereas another of my boats was coated in the same anti-foul at full price from a chandler with excellent results.

The boffins at International told me they test all their marine paints after three years and all are OK but will not guarantee them after this.

I suppose you get what you pay for.

I note most hard anti-foul is now approx £40 for a 750 ml tin. How can they justify this price?

I've just discovered Jotun paints - they supply a great deal of commercial stuff, ships, rigs etc, but don't have a 'leisure yachting' brand (i.e. fancy labels, small tins and a factor of 4 on the price).

Can't comment on the results yet (I have bought paint for my deck and A/F), but given the pedigree I'm confident:

Increased antifoul prices over the last couple of years have come from higher costs of raw materials, including copper, wholesale copper prices skyrocketed in 2008/9
Also companies like Blakes (for now...) and International still manufacture in the UK - where labour costs (and quality) are higher.
Antifouling has a relatively short effective shelf life, and to limit the amount of obsolete stock that has to be binned (for financial and environmental reasons) smaller batches need to be manufactured which is more expensive.
Also, the price hike on small tins isnt just because they can get away with it - it's actually more expensive to make a small tin than a big 5 or 20 lt one. more labels, more labour, more expensive to transport it, they need to go in a cardboard carton to prevent damage in transit...

...and companies are never going to sell something cheaply if customers are willing to pay. even if none of the above were true, companies wouldnt have to 'justify' their prices - the market does that for them. Has anybody asked Louis Vuitton how they can justify charging 3k for a handbag....? :D

We have tried this

http://www.discountantifoul.com

antifoul this time around. Met the owner of the company at a boat jumble in February, he seemed to know his stuff so we went along with it. He wasnt interetsed in the hard sell so we though we would trust him (time will tell if that was a good idea i suppose). We paid £30 for a 2.5 litre tin of the stuff, they do a (more) budget range for slower boats as well.

We applied the first coat last weekend and it applied easily and evenly. Plan on applying the final coat tomorrow. The 2.5 litre can will easily be enough for two coats on our 25ft cruiser (not a classic i admit!!).

I suppose the proof will be in the performance, but we shall see.

Anti foul

Thanks everyone for your comments. Have decided to try Jotun Sea queen and yes Shepherd Marine are very helpful. Will report back in the Autumn with results.

Just taken my boats out of the water and found very little growth, a quick hose down and they look like new, I have found this product to be second to none. Have tried all sorts of antifoul in the past and none have come near to Jotun performance.

I would highly reccomend this paint and its comparatively cheap too compared with others.

The service form Shepherd Marine is also excellent. E-mailed them last night at 19-43 expecting an answer the following day but had an answer within the hour.

i have just applied Seaqueen for the first time
Does it work

blakes Tiger is rubbish
Really? Its the only thing that works in my end of Chi Harbour! Antiflouled the end of May, beached for a scrub last week, and apart from a little weed and slime on the w/l I need not have bothered, other than the badly fouled prope, which I had not coated, and whose low performance had made me think I needed a full hull scrub.

Hey, Im in Gosport and i have my boat 36 ft yacht anti-fouled with 3 coats of micron extra every year and it is brilliant, i was recommended by a friend who recommended phil lawrence yacht care in gosport and so far the results have been fantastic.
