Anti Foul Performance

Sorry PVB But if you think they are all the same, why are you using micron extra and not something a third of the price like Flag or XM?

Don't try to misinterpret my posts - I didn't claim that they are all the same, I said "Almost all brands of antifoul contain the same sort of ingredients", and that's true. Essentially, most contain copper oxide in a carrier base. The better ones have a higher concentration of copper oxide, usually showing up as a higher SG. Some, like Micron, also contain various biocides. I use Micron because, applied correctly, it lasts easily for 2 years with minimal slime formation.

Why this year?

I know it can vary from area to area but paint manufacturers must love people who antifoul every year WHY??

I use two coats of Jotun on top of one coat Jotun primer and stay in 2 years min without problems usually just slime at lift out, after 50 years of boating
as far as antifoul is concerned I am a firm believer that 'you gets what you pay for' :)

Mike,

I changed boats last year, wanted to stay with the same colour anti foul. I could only find hempel tiger extra in the colour GREEN. I was using Premier cruising plus anti foul before that, with good results. Think I'll change the colour this year and go back

I will be using Jotun Seaqueen again, after 5 months only a small amount of slime on the rudder & turn of the bilge, the keel is clean, blue a/f

It will be nice if you can get it-it appears to be discontinued.

I can only purchase Jotun Mare Nostrum in the UK-it is Jotun's leisure market antifoul.

They will not supply any other products to non commercial end users. UK Chandlers dont have it any more in significant quantities.

The full Jotun range can be purchased in Ireland and the IOM by anyone-but not in the UK!

Our Seaqueen lasted 3 years with nothing more than a light fringe around the waterline on the sunny side of the boat. Replaced with Jotun Seaforce 90 in May this year which is specified for large vessels engaged in global trade at up to 30 knts. speed. So far perfectly clean, after about 1500 NM at 5-6 knts average during the last four months and lots of time alongside or on the hook.

I have just obtained 25 litres of red Seaforce 60 for a very attractive price (dont ask how)-should keep me going for a while!

Sorry PVB, I really wasn't trying anything, just didn't quite get what you were saying - it was the.... "satisfaction with antifoul is directly proportional to the amount of the wretched stuff you apply"... bit that threw me.

As said in other posts unfortunately Jotun Seaqueen is no longer available to the majority of us, if it was I would buy it!

This year however looking at specifications and prices etc we (a number of Colvic Watsons) have gone for Jotun Nonestop, but only available in dark blue, white, black or red, however it rolls on ok and both we have found go lighter once immersed. (attach pics so you can see colours)

The Jotun Vinyguard Silvergrey primer is almost identical to International Primocon but cost a lot less and you get more!

Note on both boats the boot topping we used three coats of International Toplac as we need to scrub a few times with no problems.

PS: I have no connection with Jotun or any of their suppliers just happy with the product !

How did that throw you? It's an easy concept to understand; most people don't put enough antifoul on, then grumble that it doesn't work.

I bought a 5l tin of International last year at the boat jumble. I've never had such a clean bottom at the end of a season. The guy who sold it said it was the same as Cruiser uno bought it was the "trade version". I can't remember the name of it now. when I opened it I thought I'd been sold a pup. It was watery on top and almost solid at the bottom however after heating it up and some vigorous stirring with a drill attachment it looked ok so slapped it on not expecting great results but It has worked better then any other stuff I've used. I don't know if it was a particularly good year for fowling or whether it was the a/f but either way I wish I could get more of it.

I used some 'inherited' XM which was well past its nutritional peak. It seems to have coped well and whatever manages to cling on to the hull is pretty much gone after a couple of hours splashing around under sail. I was intending to use it again this year but so far I haven't been able to find any.

PBO are bringing out detailed test results, comparing different antifouls at different locations, in a forthcoming edition (before the Spring I think).

The boats just been pulled out and I was looking at pattern of fouling. Having large bilge keels she is spotless unterneath but weed all over the sides. Being a cheapskate I got to thinking that next year I will stick to the cheapy stuff where the sun doesn't shine and put the more expensive version where its neeeded. Anyone else tried that?

Well, for the record this season I used blue International Micron Extra 2 at my berth at Wicormarine in Portsmouth harbour.

Wow. What a difference...

Last season I scrubbed my 7 seasons old coppercoat three times of it's 3"+ weed and occasional barnacle.

This Micron 2 a/f had some slight slime pressure washed in late August but otherwise there's been very little growth.

So, next year will bring forth another tin of Micron 2 (unless something else that I shouldn't be allowed to have comes along).

I put on two thick coats of XM 2000 last year (picked it because it was v. cheap at a jumble), and I'm not very impressed with it, it worked OK but has worn right through in a number of places, like the waterline, after only about 9 months.

I've got some Hempel Tiger Extra to try this year, hopefully that will be better.
