Antarres 760

Depends on which type of stern gear it has some seem to have a bolt on cutless housing on the skeg and others a P bracket. If the former then you may find you can remove the housing leaving the shaft in position. If a P bracket then you may be able to extract the cutless with the shaft in but it is usually easier to remove the shaft. In either case you will of course need to remove the propeller.

Hi has anyone changed a cutlass bearing on Antarres 760 with 40mm shaft if so does the shaft have to come out
Hi. The answer is "probably". First remove the prop. The bearing is held in to the grp propshaft tube with a short nylon screw (there is no cutless housing or P-bracket) once the nylon screw is removed the challege is to pull the bearing out but with nothing to get hold of its near impossible but certainly worth trying as the alternative is to remove the shaft for which you have to drop the rudder. There is a tab-washer behine the prop nut that will need renewing too. You will needs a decent prop puller and removing the propshaft flange on the forward end to extract the shaft is a big challenge!

Before you start, recommend you get a quote from a recommended person to do it for you!

no just disconnect coupling at the gearbox remove coupling push shaft back a couple of inches remove old seal refit new seal with the lip seal protecter fitted then re-fit coupling to shaft then coupling to gearbox all done ,couple of hours depending on how easy it is to remove coupling from shaft.

Oh I thought MO was asking about the cutless bearing at the aft/prop end not the shaft seal.

Looking at the pic, I am thinking that removing the prop, then the gearbox, so the shaft can be pushed forward enough to hook out the bearing.

further to my earlier postings,:-
Propshaft inboard end drive flange retaining nut needs a 40mm AF socket
Cutless bearing is OD 50mm ID 40mm length 160mm
Propeller nut needs a 41mm AF open ended spanner of max thickness 20mm assuming you have the original Radice nut (and you will need a new tab washer).

Recommend when you fit the new cutless bearing do not push it in all the way but leave 10mm protruding from the tube so you or the next person can more easily extract the bearing without withdrawing the shaft. If you are lucky then the previous owner has done that for you!

Did you find a source of that size cutless bearing? How did the replacement go?

Hi yes I did. I had to remove my rudder prop and shaft I changed the dripless volvo stern tubeseal. My cutless bearing measured 40mm I/D 50 O/D 160mm long it was a phenolic shell bearing. I used a threaded bar with a socket bolted onto the end and put a bit of heavy pipe through the threaded bar with washers and nuts and used the pipe as a sliding hammer and it came out relatively easy.the bearing was we worn. To fit bearing I kept it in the freezer overnight and took it to the boat in bucket of ice I heat up the stern tube and knocked it home with a piece of wood it went in easily. I got bearing from Beneteau via DD: Marine Largs thanks for asking
