Any ideas.

I have a simple 2 burner (calor gas) hob aboard my Antares. The whole system is now 5 years old - is there a legal requirement to have the system checked by a gas specialist and have a gas certificate issued? To date I have been quoted £193 as a guide figure. Would appreciate hearing your comments.

As dnickj has said only on inland waterways. However I recently replaced my gas regulator simply because it was looking tired and noted on the new one that it is recommended to replace your gas regulator every 10years. I do my own inspection of the gas piping and have replaced the pipe connecting the gas bottle as it was starting to crack.

If your hoses are not in the sun light they will last for years, just check for cracking, if you go to a plumbers merchant and get a spray can of gas detector, spray all joints if no bubbles appear you are ok, that is with the gas bottle turned on, if you spray the hob jets and bubbles appear your gas valve is at fault, remember to wipe them afterwards
Regards

On my previous boat, an Antares series 9 there were labels on all the gas flexibles advising they should be changed by .. some date or other.. I think at five years old but cant be sure as the memory is failing. Just as well I checked as two of them were cracked and obviously past their sell by. It was only the label on the flexible to the bottle I noticed as the others were out of site behind panels. I got a company to make up the new hoses, but they had to cut off and re use some of the fittings as they could not get new ones. Fitted it all myself. Dont know if its a legal requirement to change them or if it has to be done and checked by a registered fitter but from what I saw then the flexibles do persish and crack so so dont just leave it.

It's recommended that hoses are changed every 5 years and the regulator every 10 years. However, if these items are exposed to the elements they should be changed earlier as required. My regulator is in the forward anchor locker and so encounters a lot of salty atmosphere. For the sake of a fiver I would change mine at least once a year, keeping a spare onboard

I'm interested in the outcome of this post so I too would appreciate opinions
My two penneth worth....
As far as I'm aware there is no such thing as a "registered" marine gas fitter. If there is a registration body can someone tell me who it is?
From my research into this it would appear that the person has to be considered as being "competent". Whatever that means!
I stand to be corrected and to be honest I would hope I'm wrong because I too would like to have my boat certified as being safe by a registered company, but so far I've drawn a blank.

competent person is someone who has had the appropiate training, and holds at least the relevant certificate/s for the appliances they wish to work on. Gas safe registration is also required for providing landlord certificates if needed, most boats I test usually have something wrong (ie out of date flexi/regulator, insufficient ventilation, storage locker not vented correctly) its advisable to have an yearly test just to keep up to date and for peace of mind.

Yep there is such a thing as a boat gas engineer. search the gas safe site for one near you. Use the advance search facility http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/re...http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/Default.aspx

Expiry date is allways printed, so is british standard no. etc, beware of hoses that have been in stock for a while as its from date of manufacture not date of fitting that counts
