Another yacht seized by pirates

Back to the thread and a couple of real-life people who are in real-life danger.

Has anyone heard what, if anything, the Royal Navy is doing about this, the chaps that used to rule the waves? The last couple of French boats that were taken resulted in a speedy, kick-ass intervention by the French Navy/Special Forces.

Dear xxyyzz, if you cannot the difference between placing yourself in harms way and the commitment of a crime, (and by the way I have no truck with the other examples you give they ARE crimes of course), then you have my deepist sympathy.

Chances that the couple are still on board their yacht: 1%

Chances that they are on one of a hundred small boat spread out over a few thousand square mile of sea: 99%

....leading to the death of the owner of the seized yacht, Tanit.

Didn't one of those speedy, kick-ass interventions by French special forces result in the yacht skipper dying as a result of 'friendly' fire? I'd go for a more considered approach myself.

Ladies and gents,

Assuming the 'pirates' are internet savvy ...
I think one can safely assume that. They get shipping movement info via the internet AIS sites as well as from their onboard AIS receivers and may well have known about the yacht's intended course from it's blog.
Working from such info is going to be a lot more productive than aimlessly mooching around offshore burning up fuel on the off-chance of coming across a target vessel.
I suspect that these guys are a lot more sophisticated than many give them credit for.

Ladies and gents,

Assuming the 'pirates' are internet savvy, speculation here about how to resolve the situation may be counter-productive.

Ken - you think that Somali Pirate "Control" are sitting reading ybw.com going "oh bugg_r some guy from a yacht club in england has just suggested the SBS might get sent out; we hadn't thought of that. Jings what if the Royal Navy commanders also get their strategic advice from ybw.com - they might think thats a good idea - we'll need to take counter measures. I'm glad we checked ybw.com now we know whats coming..."

1. I doubt very much that suggestions how to resolve the situation on here are going to be "brain waves" for the UK special forces.
2. I doubt very much that the somali pirates are going to pay a blind bit of notice to possible strategies mooted here.
3. If they did then perhaps the UK special forces clever plan was to get internet rumours of a recovery opperation stirred up so that the Somalis hand over their hostages with no fuss... in which case you trying to quieten down such speculation is counter productive.

Or perhaps ybw.com is actually just a bunch of middle aged blokes sitting in front of the computer believing they know how best to run the world and noone else paying a blind bit of attention...

But you don't consider the violent kidnap of two old codgers on holiday a crime, no, that's down to their own foolishness - not the immoral actions of a gang of greedy psychopaths?

Dear xxyyzz,
It is of course a great pity that this has happened, and I do feel for these people. But I am sure you, like everyone else, are aware of the actions by Somali pirates in this region. If you were faced with the data concerning making this journey yourself would you do it?, or would you consider the risk too great?. We are not talking here about what you come against as a sailor, weather, tides, rocks, shoals etc for which you can make a value judgment, BUT people who have little respect for human life or property and above all are unpredictable in their actions.

Message to internet savvy pirates: after many months of pirating and multiple $1M+ ransoms paid, are you not worried that the intellegence services of the nations you are pissing around with know where you live and have a nice smart bomb ready to land on your flash pad overlooking the sea? I would be.

I think the people who do this for a living will be rather more clued up about possible resolutions than a bunch of yotties in their armchairs at home.

"Good grief, Nasir, there's a chap here in Droitwich who thinks the SBS might come after us."

"Golly, Mukhtar. That thought had never entered my head."

You mean like a town centre on a Saturday night?

I notice you have the Algarve down as your location, have you seen this?

In light of that do you not think that staying in such a location is foolish?

I'm no fool though, I'm in nice safe Timperley:-
