Whilst in L'Aberwrach coming back from S Brittany last week we saw 2 Dehler 41 DS yachts side by side, they weren't actually together just coincidence. One had a large ensign which was the union flag in the centre of a white background. I was guessing the owner was a high ranking naval officer but can't find any references to that type of flag.

I'm pretty sure there's someone here who knows the answer.

Cheers

Sounds like a pilot jack. Never heard of it being flown as an ensign before, but according to Wikipedia it might or might not be legal. Odd though. Perhaps it was the only thing they had to hand.

Doesn't mean anything special, really. In my experience it's normally flown from the stemhead on pilot cutters or vessels where the Master is also a pilot (ferries and suchlike).

My source suggests it is now the civil jack which can be flown by any civilian vesel as a jack. Apoart from those who can fly special ensigns the only approved ensgn is the red so it does seem to be illegal but it is so rarely enforced who cares really, at least he is not claaiming to be something he isn't.

Interesting, thanks. Still odd, though. Presumably he meant to fly it in preference to the red duster and not just out of ignorance as he would have had to go out of his way to get it as I can't imagine many places would keep such a flag in stock. Unless of course he just nicked it off the front of the nearest P&O ferry.

Pilots Flag?

Having now looked up the pilots flag online that seems to be the nearest to what was displayed. Although it was more 1/4 size union flag in centre of white (slightly off white) background.

It seemed a bit odd though displayed as a large ensign.

Cheers
