Another treat for all you rowing fans...

So no river left for us then?

As we Motor Boats pay £2.4m and Rowing - £150K - thats about 16:1, presumably that should mean we can shut the river off 16 times more than them?

How about the whole of August banned for rowing?

Wouldnt that be peaceful, think of it, you could use the towpath without the ring ring of a coach barging past on cycle, no megaphones to wake you up on Sunday morning.

Bliss......ooops was having a lovely daydream there....

The rowing is a spectacle and part of the character of the river, everybody loves Henley don't they :) Rowers generaly don't use locks, don't use pump outs, don't need moorings, don't need a maintained depth and aren't too worried about flooding they also fly the flag at international sporting events, get lots of youngsters out on the water, I've no problem giving them a discount, same goes for canoists and the BCU general licensing arrangements. Sport on the river is something we should be proud of not trying to make more expensive and elitist.

Marlow Rowing Club
Full adult membership £302 p.a.
Under 18 or in full time education £198 p.a.
Racking Fees for boat storage anything from £100 -£200 p.a.

EA Standard Registration Charge for an unpowered craft £30 p.a.
British Rowing discounted rate £19 p.a. - no charge for coaching or safety craft.

I make no further comment.

Er, hang on a min...

I don't love Henley, the most Elitist event on the upper Thames.

I PAY for pump outs, thanks very much, and moorings too in nearly every case.

Sport on the River is fine, but surely that includes Boat handling, which in Bray CC's case was constantly interrupted by Rowers who didn't appear to give a t0ss about the proceedings in hand. We didn't say a word, but accommodated their obvious handicaps.

I wonder if they would extend us the same courtesy?

That's not what SWMBO (who is a cox), and my son (rower and level 2 rowing coach) tell me!

However, both of them agree that the behaviour of many rowers toward motor cruisers leaves a lot to be desired!

(The poor boatmanship exhibited in the Marlow reach during the first bank holiday in May was a case in point.... Alex was helming our boat through there and was highly unimpressed!!).

Quite right. Also, it's also not as easy as it looks steering a 4, let alone one of the larger 8's despite there often being coxes. MB's are much more manoeverable and dodging the worst offenders provides some spice to any journey:)

So chill out all you old grumps and disarm any sullenness from the many teenage rowers with a smile and a wave. You never know, you will probably be saluting a future olympian:p

It's not easy steering 6 tonnes of GRP at 2 knots going downstream either.

Olympian or not, the only salute a rude teenager will ever get from me, is the one Winston Churchill favoured. I never could remember which way around it went...:p

Thank you for the information Ramage - no doubt posted to inform people of a river event in case anyone wanted to partake / spectate.

Shame about the OGNA (Oh God, Not Again..) thread drift.

Look, just to settle your mind, I have no issue with Rowers, I just don't like mannerless plebs, whatever club they happened upon.

Same goes for Drivers, Motorboaters, whoever.

The only issue I have is Rowers who are rude, lax with common sense, and think they own the River.

I stick to the rules of the River, that way there can be no arguments.

Now do you see where my POV is? :D

I do actually whole heartedly agree with your POV... The mooring association of which I'm a member is currently pursuing a number of official complaints with the EA about certain members of our local clubs, as the PITA brigade of rowers are really spoiling some things for other river users, including the innocent robo's....

I just felt a bit sorry for Paul who had posted some river info in good faith and unwittingly started the whole robo thing again!

Peace. :)

I think Henley is a great event. I have been lucky enough to be invited to a corporate event there a couple of times and really enjoyed it. Didn't realise they did rowing there though, I wondered what all the noise was about!
