So presumably there is a risk assesment and method statement for that somewhere in their workshops.

Do you really think the RNLI do more than check the levels and tyre pressures on their vehicles?

They will use the motor trade for anything other than the above.

rotax-thanks for belittling my 25 years work as an RNLI Station Mechanic,and the work of the RNLI employed Divisional Technicians while you were out single handedly saving the sport of motorcycle racing.
In my 25 years,no machinery(ALB's,ILB's Tractors,Talus(doubt if you even know what one of these is)Trailers and other stuff) in my care, failed to start and/or complete its job.I have also cleaned seagull sh1t off the Lifeboat when she was afloat.
Can you say that in all your years of bike racing(done a bit myself)that you have never DNF'd due to mechanical problems??

Sorry-I got that one wrong!

I am giving myself a severe bollocking as I write this.

Of course I DNF'ed a few times, but not normally on bikes I prepared myself.

3 finishes out of 4 six lap IOM starts, the DNF was a gear selector shaft that broke flush with the casing, leaving me stuck in 4th gear. Everything else was going good.

I hear what you say, sorry to upset you and your collegues who maintain the kit.

I was a plonker to make such a stupid post, unaware of the responsibilities of guy's in your job.

There are not many people that are aware of the responsibilities of a full time Lifeboatman/woman,usualy only their families,certainly not Poole!!!!

one cannot help feeling that it is a great pity that you feel like that about------"poole" ----.
management must surely be aware of that gap and one wonders what they are doing about it and if it is indeed all that one sided. Makes one wonder

One coxswain recently described Poole to me as a "parasitic cancer on the crews around the country".

That was the most repeatable part!

That is such a one sided comment that leads me to make my comment that it may not all be so one sided and it may not always be the fault of Poole. however, it is managements job to sort it.

We all love to hate "Head Office" in whatever shape and form it comes in and even the best HO gets it wrong often enough to provide stories that confirmation bias takes as proof they're useless. All the times they get it right get forgotten, of course.

Absolutely, and it's encouraging that one of the first people he chose to see was Frank Smith, the Salcombe legend - someone not known for being overly diplomatic!

We saw the same in HMCG though - the new CEO will be up against a whole structure of careers based on regulation and job-justification, not for nothing have the RNLI been repeatedly warned by the Charity Commission for not using funds appropriately. The old system of DIs, coast based training, and some central involvement worked well - yet Poole has trebled in size while stations on the coast are being cut. When you have a "lifesaving manager" responsible for lifeboats, who has never served on one or been to sea, there is a credibility gap which needs addressing.

Volunteers are difficult to manage - but there are times when a good manager will simply shut up and realise that sometimes - not always - the people they are managing know more than them. That's Poole's biggest problem.
