Another Race - More Deaths

Updates

4th body (owner) was not found as earlier reported. The USCG called off the search but a private group continues on.

New theory on what happened = they ran around into small island. This rumor is based on Spot and race tracking records BUT only a rumor. Many still believe it was a large comm'l ship that ran over them.

A couple of the bodies had severe blunt force trauma according to the medical examiner and one drowned.

Looks like possibly more than a rumour

Ok- strong rumor

Saw the track and read comments as I was traveling all day.
Some theorize that because winds were so light that they might have gone with engine and auto-pilot. But a sailboat does not motor fast enough to shred the whole boat and killing everyone when it runs aground......usually.
The largest piece seems to be part of the transom with the name.
The focus has been on the victims so hopefully at some point an investigation will give a definitive answer

Maybe not motoring alone but an ocean swell breaking on an offshore island can be easily be powerful enough to rip a boat to pieces. No wind needed. Whatever way it happened it's shocking to think of how it must have been like for those onboard.

Hard to see how the SPOT Tracker could have continued at pace into the island if the boat it was on had been run over by a ship.

The Coronados are very conspicuous indeed and it would be strange just to run into them, unless of course in thick fog which happens
but is rarer here than further up the Californian coast.

I guess there must be the suspicion that somehow they had fallen foul of the drugs trade, this area is about the most active in the world
for small, fast drug-running boats. One came into San Diego right alongside us and was seized ... I was glad to leave and reach Encenada.

Point well taken

OK, good point. Although supposedly, it was pretty calm with minimal swells that night....we'll see what the final out come is, and yes, shocking no matter the cause
