Seems summer is coming! sorry but the fact we have bought another boat means it might be a bad one!!!

Almost 2 years to the day after selling our last rib and moving to the SC29 we are back in a rib again.

The Sealine just wasnt for us, nothing wrong with the boat but just not what we wanted from our boating........so, after a year sorting out the house and trying to save a bit we have bought another rib.

She is a Cougar R9 with Inboard Steyr 256 on Bravo 1. When we took her out for a sea trial a few weeks ago she was hitting 44 Kts at WOT so with a few repairs to a slightly dinged prop we are hoping to get a top of 45 Kts although all out speed isnt the be all and end all! the ability to cruise at 32 kts in relative comfort is what we are after and this boat does it with ease!

I dont have a good picture of the boat yet but the one below is identical colours but without the raised foredeck and center table we have. Next job is some teak decks and we will be all set!!

Boat will be on the Hamble so if you see us, give us a wave!, the name..... well Charlie Brown of course!!

Happy boating everyone! we cant wait to be out on the water again. like a kid with a new toy!!

That looks like a serious bit of fun.

Wow, 45kts out of a 250hp diesel on a 30 footer is indeed impressive, even for a RIB. Which prop are you spinning?
At Cougar they must know how to design a fast hull, anyway.
Congratulations, I'm sure you'll enjoy the ride!

Thanks all.

I was really surprised with the performance but it was seen with my own eyes from GPS so i can honestly confirm, its not one of those figures plucked out of the sky.

The prop is a 5 blade (not sure which yet but can check later) which gives it speed from the hole shot but not the highest top end so with some tweaking i am sure we can get that up a bit but until we are used to the boat its good enough for me at the moment.

The hull has a twin step and the boat is very light. Dry hull only is around 1100 Kgs and all up with 180L of fuel on we think its about 1800 Kgs.

as for Brighton, maybe in a few weeks when its a bit warmer! unlike you, we dont have a kettle for the all important mug of tea en route!

Congratulations zippy. Lovely machine

Congratulations.

Brighton is this weekend's destination, how about a race? OK, maybe not, you just have the edge!

K, will you be in Brighton marina? I'm planning to be there 3pm-4pm ish Saturday, by car not boat, to pick up some raymarine gear, then I have to shoot off. If your new v48 is available for a viewing I'll drop by for a quick cuppa :-) (No worries if not convenient or if those times don't work out!) Ditto Jimmy Le Constructeur - you on Vega this wkend?

Yep, I'be there tomorrow afternoon, trying to put all the new trims back in without having too many bits left over afterwards :D. Be good to see you. (I have new gadgetty thing you might be interested in, tee-hee).

Cheers

Childish, I know, but that made me laugh :)

Hi Howard,

That looks the business :D

I can see I'm going to become very grumpy over the next few months :( me jealous.. never!

On the prop front If you switched to a 3 blade I think you'd see top end getting very close to 50 kts :D:D

now that made me smile!!!

Well,

picked the boat up from John at Cougar Marine yesterday lunchtime! managed to get out for a play and over to cowes before the rain came! Lucky the heavens opened whilst we were sat in the Fountain having some lunch and a little celebration drink!

Havent been to the Fountain for ages but its really nice! Food was lovely and fast and hot and cheap!! the harbour commision left us a little note asking for £5 so after paying, (a very helpful lady in the office) we set off again.

Oh my god it was cold but i still have the smile on my face!!! really really pleased so far with her. with the 5 blade prop we were hitting 44.5 kts at WOT so next step is to get the prop re worked and see what that does and then maybe experiment with some different props to increase top end.

Its a very different boat to our previous ribs and really looking forward to getting used to here before the summer!!!

will post some pictures when we get them and should be back out tomorrow assuming my hangover isnt too bad after the rugby and the weather plays ball!!

Hang on a second, is that a 24" Maximus by chance?
If so, don't touch it! I can make you a decent offer for that prop, if you really want to change it.
Though my personal recommendation, if you have a Maximus and the engine reaches its proper max rpm, is to stick with it.
But if you really want to go for 2 or 3 mph more, most likely it's a 4 blades Bravo I the way to go.

Sorry, just to be clear, when i say reworking, i dont mean changing pitch but simply repairing! the previous owner used the boat for some beach landing and it has a few dings so will get them repaired and see how it goes.

as for the prop itself, i really like its performance, expecially from getting it up on the plane, i was expecting this to be really slow but it hops up nicely. there is very little hump to get over. The acceleration will be really useful in the summer for wakeboarding!

cant wait to get out tomorrow now, its been lovely down here today, just wish my head wasnt still banging from last night!

Hi Tim,

good to see you, hope the course went well?

aye, the grin factor was there and even more so when SWMBO asked to helm as we got out of the river! she loved driving so much i didnt get a look in until we got back to the marine and she gave me the parking job!!

was note to get some fresh air to blow the cobwebs away!!

So I guess we know the answer to the question then!!
