another idiot with mad ideas, new boat build

at the moment, go back to work. :)
still in planning by a long way, whilst doing loads of research. what pushed the button really was the offer of a pair of engines at a good price. (not new I might add)
I still awaiting final design changes from Hans, (the designer), and more general arrangements before anything more concrete starts.
I have an absolute mountain of details to go through.
I have been re going over my notes from when we built the atlantic, at work, at its a monumental task... (not quite as....:)

I am going around my boat now, as I have been doing for the last few times making notes, on how i use it, or dont. what to change, whats good, whats bad, what drives me up the wall.
so hopefully from that can come up with a working plan.
my biggest bugbear is storage, or a waiste of it.
for example, under the aft seating, why not make the base in to storage bins... odd how they have not...

lots to do before the first piece of steel is cut.
It also gives me loads of time to go to work and pay for stuff as Im going along.

Don't do it!! (oops, sorry :D)

Seriously, people are giving away old flybridge cruisers for beer money at the moment, so have you considered retrofitting your new engines into an older cruiser, updating the interior, and saving yourself lots of heartache and several hundred thousand pounds?

yes, I have.
The cheaper the better, then you can rip em apart and turn em in to what you want.
I enjoy the process, and will get as much enjoyment out of building as I would from using it.
Maybe it is another of my hair brained ideas, the bad bit is they normal end up getting done.
my last hair brained idea turned in to me building a 160bhp 160kg missile of a bike.
14 years later I still have it and abuse it regularly :)
My last stupid idea :)
It's changed a bit since, now wearing world superbike spec suspension :)

Ive looked, and decided I may as well do it myself :)
find a design I like, and go for it. the difficult bit will be done. the welding.
I can do that, but the time scale, cost of crane in shed type building, etc etc all adds up to the fact, better pay them to do what they do best. And the cloggies make fine ships.
I have a few ideas I would like to add, storage for a wave ski to start with, diving gear, fishing gear, and me.
Long range, and foul weather. If it does 22knots flat out and cruises at 16 or 18 Ill be very happy. we shall see what the designer comes back with.

Hey Rob,

Looks awesome. Does it need skegs / keels like the Brede class lifeboat for protection of running gear and ability to dry on the hard straight and level with ease.

Where will you build it ?? Prices of hard standing and access to prompt shipping etc may make a huge difference in overall build cost??

I think if this goes ahead you may even be challenging JFM's 78 Squadron build thread for number of posts (definitely will take longer time wise ).

Cheers
Karl

Thanks Bramers :)

I reckon i would get the hull shipped up to my neck of the woods for initial fit out and work. There are enough river side locations with good access to the local canal/river network and access to trent and humber is easy enough. Both are within ten to 15 miles reach.
I dont reckon Im looking for a challenge to JFM, his end result is a different league for me, but mine will be different, for hopefully good reasons too.
hey, I have not started yet... just getting ideas in earnest.
Hopefully I can use JFM's and the rest of the forums encyclopaedic knowledge of all things boat to good advantage.
When I looked at some of the older designs, i reckon this could take to the mud if required, only so we can have a game of cricket at les Minquiries :)

I'm glad you've seen the light but at your desired speeds you'll never make it to Norway. How much more would it be to do the build in aluminum?

That depends upon the tank capacity :)

Also I think 22 knots with twin 380's on a 50ft steel semi-displacement is a tad optimistic... better off with a single and wing engine on this one I believe... speed = $$$

Tad optimistic = mad? :) If, and it's a big IF, it does manage 22kts then I'd guess at 3 - 4 gallons per mile, maybe more. Cruising speed (as stated) 16 -18 kts, probably 2 - 3 gallons per mile?

We both seem to agree on a single + wing and hydraulic thrusters. It has to be a pure displacement vessel, nothing else makes sense.

I think it's absolutely bloody gorgeous especially in the profile. I can easily understand why you want to do it yourself after seeing how you turned your current boat into what you wanted. Stupid question but how do you fix stuff non-metal stuff to the inside of a steel hull?

Well, fwiw, I would also go for a single screw, in a boat like that.
But I wouldn't even bother fitting a wing engine - at least, not the typical saildrive stuff, which is much more likely to fail than the main anyway, and is only installed by some builders for the very simple reason that clients want it. I'd rather consider a genset driven backup on the main shaft instead.

Anyway, that said, actually the hull doesn't look like a pure D hull at all. I'd like to see the bottom of the twin engines version, because I guess that also in that one the shafts are well protected by skegs, though of course that can't be as bomb proof as with a single.
And if Rob wants to have at least the possibility to cruise in the high teens, there isn't any realistic alternative to twin engines.
Though I'm with Alf in thinking that the numbers Rob mentioned sound a bit optimistic with 380 ponies each side, on this type of vessel.

Looking forward to a very interesting build thread, if Rob eventually decide to take the plunge.
If such stupid idea will produce the same results of his last one, she'll be awesome! :)

desired speed and what I actually do may be too different things.
If I was going to Norway from the bluetoon I would not be doing 18 knots for sure. 8 maybe.
hull design is semi displacement, and is currently been redesigned. I asked about build in Ali, but would take a complete redesign from the ground up really.
which is a shame as would probably halve the weight.
