I've ended up with a massive abundance of dual-melt hot glue. I'm wondering how well suited this would be to gluing ply linings onto GRP... anyone tried it?

I have used hot melt glue for jobs not on a boat. I would suspect you will be unlikely to apply enough blobs to fix any large panel, especially a roof panel, before it cools and stops getting a good bond. The movement within the boat during use will probably cause the bonding to flex and move, eventually loosing adehsion.

If you want to try it then my advice would be to apply the glue to both contact parts, then use a hot air gun to heat all the glue points, then push back and hold until cool. To be safe I would also advise a few screws to hold securely in place. Only glue panels in place that you will never need to remove, you must be able to get at any fixings or cable runs.
