Another boat stereo question.

There are some good USB/SD card MP3 units around now.

What budget did you have in mind to spend on a head unit?
Would second hand be okay?
Where will it be going open cockpit or cabin? - due to element exposure.

thought about 100 quid ish and not too bothered if its good second hand - last one has lasted the 7 yrs we've had the boat and a good few before that too, twas a blaupunkt-
it lives in cabin - boats very dry and plan to tap into existing speakers-just not that bothered about carrying cds any more and planning to get an mp3 to plug in via usb or aux (60 quid ish!-any ideas on that too!)

So after spending half an hour in halfords talking with a very helpful youth I ended up buying a pioneer head unit.
Half price at £120, from £250. Plays through a USB or via Bluetooth with an iPhone 4. Fitted this and the speakers today and it all works fine.

Half price at £120, from £250. Plays through a USB or via Bluetooth with an iPhone 4. Fitted this and the speakers today and it all works fine.

might nip to halfords tomorrow-which model did you get-sounds like we may have chance of an early model ipod from friends so if we can get that linked to a decent head set may be the way to go

Try it first without the iPod. If the interface is like the Alpine the iPod does not offer any advantages over a USB stick.

Rubbish. Your USB stick is useless for listening in bed with headphones. You also can't take it for a walk etc like you can with the iPod. The iPod also has the advantage of being built in to all good phones these days so no need to carry more than one device.

Ah then cover art and the lack of temptation to have a USB stick sticking out of the front of the unit are all I can think of.

On the Alpine unit the USB stick plugs into the same cable as the iPod. It leads from the back of the unit to one of the navigation table compartments so the USB stick and iPod can be kept tucked away. All the controls for the iPod or usb stick can be operated from the alpine unit and it will display the song title artist etc ( if this information is on the stick)

I have one of these plugged into my car stereo and it is small enough to allow the cover to be virtually closed over it. Ideal for front sockets on stereos as there is virtually nothing sticking out to get broken!

Cant remember the model,some sort of Pioneer. however it was originally £250 and I paid £120. So far I have mainly used the bluetooth to play music but the USB thing works well.
