another bigoted sailor

That said I was apalled when on board a big Mobo in the Solent to find that friendly waves to Yotties were largely ignored. Rude I call it.

Hee he! That said, yesterday SWMBO and I both waved at a mobo guy as we came into Chi harbour, he looked around expecting to see a sail boat somewhere, then shyly waved back, poor bloke was totally confused!:D

And it's not as though every example of a sailing boat is a picture of loveliness. Only it's mother could love something like this, IMHO.

A thing of beauty compared with ....

I enjoy waving to raggies to see how many wave back. A lot do, some just ignore us and others pointedly turn away.

Mind you we get the same from mobos, some are more friendly that others so I think it's a person rather than raggie/mobo thing.

Life's too short, to quote the name of one of my neighbour's boat "Smile and Wave" :D

I wonder if this individual is as unpleasant in person, in contrast to his forum personality.

Please Mr coaster tell me where I have "unpleasant" . If you are refering to my post to Elessar then please read his posts refering to me . Please dont "troll" the thread up.

It's not just mobos vs WAFIs. It is a strange phonomenon of the UK that people who 'do' one sport tend to distrust and distance themselves from people who 'do' another.

In the Maritime context, sailors look down on motorboaters, and everyone except their users hates PWCs (=Jetskis). There is no love lost between professional fishermen and amateur boaters of any description. Divers are suspicious of yachtsmen, motorboaters and anglers, and surfers wouldn't dream of drinking with any of them. Within the sailing community there are 'cruisers' and 'racers' with scarcely a good word to say about one another. The distinctions get finer: when I was long-distance cruising we hardly ever talked to charterers, considering ourselves far superior, and they in turn referred to us disparagingly as 'live-aboards'!

I would like to 'come out' and admit that I am: a) a yactsman with a yacht, with a love of cruising but who enjoys the occasional race, b) a diver, c) used to own a RIB, d) enjoy catching and eating fish. If I had ever been able to stand up on the thing I would love surfing. In Australia or the USA I would be quite normal, but in the UK it makes me a bit freaky.

+1

How about that for bigotry!

(I've skipped a few pages - in case this has been covered)

Well Elessar.

I have long thought that the MoBo place is more refined.

On Scutbut there are endless rows about Anchors, AIS, Radar, Stern Gear, New Boats, Old boats and the rest of it.

You lot seem to get on better, or maybe you are more laid back. Or maybe you have fall outs that I have not noticed?

Yachties are bad tempered out of frustration with the weather - too much or not enough wind.
Whereas moboists never leave their berth unless the sea is a mill pond, that's if they can afford the fuel..!

It is exactly that belief which causes some of the bad feeling - motorboaters who go past thinking those in sailing boats are envious of them. I like my sailing boat, it isn't second best. If I wanted a motorboat I would have one but I don't. I am in no way envious of you and hope you aren't too disappointed that I don't regard you better than me because of your choice of possession.

I do agree with you and I hope he was tongue in cheek. If anything I'm envious of saily boats - my wife won't let me have one. However I love my MoBo and have a lot of fun in her. And I get to sail quite a bit to so I'm quite lucky.

Just noticed you have the answer to it all in your sig :)

Anyway, all in all, the thread has had more of the "lets get along" sentiment to the "all mobo/yachties are the devil" sentiment. That's my experience of boating, thankfully.

That's something to cheer.

I can't understand any antipathy towards beautiful vessels like .....
Fairline-Targa-38.gif

Surely anyone owning such a craft must have impeccable taste and charisma to match?

Now where's that boaking emoticon?

Don't know what "boak" means?

I'd take it.. Bet it's rather comfy on a Sunny day. :)

Fortunately I don't aspire to a generalised view on any form of boating.. (Oh ok, Jet-ski's are close, but i'd probably like having a go on one.)

I've met great people and complete pillocks from all 'walks' of the boating world.

I admit that I am one of the first to have a gentle dig at moboers (and sometimes even a harder poke when they bite :) ). I sail because I like sailing and class myself as a sailor through and through even though I am buying myself a RIB as retirement present next year. But I actually have more power boat qualifications than sailing qualifications and probably more than a lot of moboers on here, including the jet ski competency cert I did today. So I think I am in quite a good position to have a dig in both directions now and again to while away those quiet evenings ;).
