I know lots of sailors, and am one myself despite owning a mobo. Nice people, good fun, love boats, "hate" my mobo in a friendly way but will still join me on it.

Sometimes I meet sailors that are a little suspicious of me when I arrive in a mobo, but invariably we have a friendly chat about boats and realise we have more in common than differences.

Why then, when most sailors are nice people (as are most motor boaters) why is there a greater proportion of bigoted idiots on this forum, and by that i'm afraid I specifically mean the saily bit?

here's another for the list http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=286067

Elessar,

There are lots of out spoken out of date people every where.
If you can't enlighten them, you can ignore them.

I cannot explain why so many on this forum are so bigoted, try the Cruisers (http://www.cruisersforum.com/) forum for a nicer standard of reply.

We all hide behind our keyboard persona on forums, we are anonymous and can't be touched. Secondly words written often do not contain the emotion which would be clearly visible when said face to face (this is the only forum I use I use which does NOT have in post emoticons)

Over the years I have met many people whose forum persona is totally the opposite of their real persona, and once the forum friendship has become a personal friendship you read their posts in a different light.

Or this one...

I can't understand any antipathy towards beautiful vessels like .....

Surely anyone owning such a craft must have impeccable taste and charisma to match?

Now where's that boaking emoticon?

Don't know what "boak" means?

Hmm, I agree it's not the best looking boat, but I don't hate it like you clearly do. They've gone a bit function over form, but it would be a very nice boat to be on I think. It has a nice open cockpit that can be closed over in an instant, and I for one prefer that to donning oilies. It will have a cockpit more comfy that any sailing boat sub 50 ft I reckon. But if you like sitting out in the cold and wet that's fine too, and actually when I sail I accept that as part of it. If I could press the "be dry" button on a saily boat I would though. The point is, we don't have to hate each other because we have a different taste in boats.

What's the difference between 'being bigoted', and 'voicing an opinion' ?

bigoted - blindly and obstinately attached to some creed or opinion and intolerant toward others; "a bigoted person"; "an outrageously bigoted point of view"

Seems to me that it's just a question of degree ... ?

("blindly and obstinately attached to some creed or opinion and intolerant toward others" - sounds like just about every religious person I've ever met)

Its a bit like politics, far left and far right are loonies. Middle ground, there may be differences, but most get on with a little jovial banter.

Just the same with boats, thats life.

It's far more complex than that. One person can be ambivalent about some subjects, but very angsty over others.
So you may find me very laid back about the topic of (say) boat names but OldHarry (just an example) may find me very arsey about flag etiquette.

So there we'll have two forumites with different opinions about me.
Multiply that by the number of subjects, opinions and forumites and it all becomes very confusing.

Some forumites will shine through as very reasonable overall (insipid, perhaps) and others as very contentious (bolshy).

(oh yes, and others as bonkers)

I agree with you, it is an interesting question. And yes to an extent it is a matter of degree. To me the difference is the intolerance bit.
Recent statements by clyst, webcraft and now sandyman are so beyond the line they are most definitely, IMHO, bigoted statements.
I'll give sandyman the benefit of the doubt and hope that he was just drunk when he started the thread.

Good point - the sailing forums are no worse than the mobo forum. Some there brand anybody wind assisted as a f***ing idiot. (i.e WAFI)

True, WAFI is not a term of endearment. But, in most cases, I don't feel it comes with the mal-intent evident on some recent posts here. If it offends I will be as vocal about stopping it there as I am being here.
