Another Battery Question

Hi pvb

I assumed that being nearly half a vote down on charge would be a bit much and a float of 13.9 for the remaining Lifeline is a bit high; am I wrong? Is there any particular reason behind your preference for the Rolls?

They're all AGM batteries, with essentially the same chemistry and will work with similar charge voltages. Being "half a volt down" won't harm it, you'll just need longer to recharge, but then you will need just as long feeding the lower voltage into any AGM. I have no particular preference; the Rolls as I recall has a longer cycle life.

Thank you both again for your extremely helpful advice. I think I will go for the Trojans, the're slightly cheaper, and although I take the point about a longer cycle life for the Rolls, as I am now the wrong side of 70, I think they will see my sailing days out!

One final question if I may; if I did go for the 14.4/13.9 setting on my charger in order to cut down on charging time, would the high float charge be detrimental to the batteries?

Not necessarily detrimental, it's no worse than running the engine for long periods (unless your alternator happens to have a multi-stage regulator which can actually achieve a float voltage - most can't).

I'd agree with PVB in principal. But, unless i was living onboard, i'd use the lower settings. No point holding them at the higher voltage for extended periods if you don't need the slighty faster charging.

Thanks guys.

I don't often run the batteries down that much as I am not a great fan of anchoring, so apart from the odd cross channel and across Lyme Bay, I am rarely off shore power for more than three or four hours. In view of this I think I'll stick to the lower setting.

Many Thanks

Rick

My 3 are all hankook too but not that version. 2 years now and going strong. Budget brand so not expensive to replace either even if they do only last 5 years.

My donestic bank is also Hankook, but not AGM. Also only about 2 years old, but working well.
