I recently connected my small CTEK charger to one of my 2-year-old service batteries as the battery was down to 12.5v. After 5 minutes or so the charger green light was indicating charged. Is it normal for such charging to take so little time?

No, give it a full 12 - 24 hour charge.

A fully charged battery should, at rest, be about 12.8v. So, as others have said, charge overnight. Then leave for 24hrs with no load on it (best disconnected) and then stick a voltmeter across the terminals and see what you get.

What mode did you select on the charger?

Could be a case of RTFM.

I am a recent convert to RTFM and life has become much easier!

Tony.
