BBC local news just reported another 31 dead dolphins washed ashore on
the beaches of Cornwall since the new year
How many are still waiting to be washed ashore dead??????
BBC reported, " the good news is they are all common dolphins and not
the rarer Bottlenose" Well thats okay then!!!!!!!!
The experts say, All showed signs of being caught in nets, beaks damaged,
fins cut off, many more are expected as the Bass fishing season has just
begun,
This involves a pair of trawlers towing a net TWO KILOMETRES wide and ONE
KILOMETRE DEEP, They start towing off Lands End and don't haul in again
until they are off Dover,
How much longer is this going to be allowed to continue ?
I know I only posted on this topic a couple of weeks ago, but I feel very
strongly about this.

And they wonder why fisheries are dying! I think some form of direct action needs to be taken as the politicians clearly have no interest in the situation.

the American and the Austrailian governments have already
banned the use of thes nets, due to the carnage they cause,
Mr Blair seems to what ever the Americans say or do, so hopefully
some action will be taken soon!!!!!!!

Mike I doubt it. I worked as a lad in inshore tralwers in Scotland in early 70's and all the fishermen knew then the sorry state of fish stocks. I think the only way forward is a moratorium on any sort of fishing for at least the next 10 years.

Its something I really feel serious about!

We can always hope they catch a submarine in their net, trawlers statistically don't do so well with such a large catch!!!

Totally agree, Always very sad to read about the way these dolphins have died. When sailing in our Sabre 27 around the solent we always look out for them but so far have not been lucky. We have a seen a seal eating a very large fish for dinner, even this was good to see but did feel a bit sorry for the fish. When it is mother nature and natures food chain it is easier to take but these trawlers should be stopped.

According to the WMN this morning numbers have now jumped up to 36 in Cornwall alone . A load of hot air spouted but nothing positive be done!!

Ah well some'in will have to be done soon!!

Totaly agree with you as per previous posting, this sort of thing should have been baned years agne of the dive mags a couple of years ago ran an artical on Dolphin deaths this concerned a certain countries drift netters could put down nets of anything up to FIVE MILES long if I remember correctly.

last month it was thirty, wonder what the dophin population
numbers off the south coast?

The only hope

... (for the marine mammals) is that the fishery collapses before they are all killed.
But - starvation based natural selection would reduce their numbers as well.
It's a no-win situation for the dolphins, they just do n't vote!!!!

another damaging fishing pracitise is scallop trawling... using a net to scrape scallops and everything else off the bottom of the sea...

apparently the seabed looks like a desert and takes years to regenerate after this process...

it may be less dramatic but in the long term equally if not more damaging
