Could anyone advise me on the relative merits of anodised mast versus 2 pack painted masts. I've been quoted a paint job for a new mast but am concerned that it will not protect the mast as well as anodised treatment and will cause me future corrosive problems, especially in those areas where steel meets aluminium!

Re-aodising is a difficult process and requires all the fittings to be removed etc, etc. It's also expensive. Which is why it's not done very often. Painting is cheaper and can be repaired, renewed fairly easily. If the mast is anodised and ok, leave it alone, apart from cleaning. If it's painted, then repaint when neccessary. Where steel meets aluminium on an anodised mast, there is also a possible corrosion problem. So that is not just a concern with painted masts. I would go for an anodised mast, then when it gets tatty, in about 10-15 years, paint it. FWIW, IMHO
