Anodes!!

Hi chaps , just pulled boat out and have to replace anodes , what is the difference between magnesium ones or ally?? , also noticed quite bad corrosion on one of the rams , can I fill it to protect from further corrosion and if so what is recommended !! oh its bravo 3 leg

Magnesium for fresh water and zinc for salt water. Can't help with rams but sounds expensive.

Depends on your area of use

Zinc = sea water
Aluminium = brackish water
Magnesium = fresh water

You probably don't have enough anode protection, or you are using the wrong anodes! If you leave your boat connected to the mains power all the time this will erode the anodes far more quickly than if you are connected to the mains just when you are on the boat. The problem could even be caused by the boat moored next to you! Its a big problem with large marinas where you have high power cables running up and down the pontoons, there is always a discharge into the water which results in electrolosis action on your expensive bits that dangle in the water!

To help cut down the problem:

1. Don't leave boat hooked up to shore power all year long.
2. Make sure that your anodes are correctly earthed and are working.
3. When boat is moored for long periods without use, try adding extra protection by dangling an extra large anode correctly earthed back to your engine block into the water close to your outdrives.

Lastly I had outdrives for many years and also suffered this type of problem and I did just what you have suggested, filling the eroded areas with a good quality metal filler and it lasted years!
