Anode mating surfaces

Should the anode mating surface on an Alpha outlet be bare metal?

I've just remove the anodes that were on the boat when we bought the boat, and after cleaning up underneath found there is a layer of paint.

I'm unsure as to whether I should remove the paint down to bare metal before fitting the new anodes.

I don't think so. You want the electrolysis to attack the anode, not the leg. The anode should be bonded through the bolt to the leg, so I think you should be all right. If in doubt contact Tom Parker (Tompa Marine aka Mercuryman on this forum), all round good egg and Mercruiser expert.
