Considering moving to a location where the boat will be moored in fresh water but when sailing will be on the sea.

Can anyone advise me as to how this will affect my choice of anodes.

Many thanks for any replies.

You need magnesium ones. Zinc ones don't do anything in fresh water, allegedly. All of the above came from a marine engineer in Penarth, which is fresh water.

Don't take my word for it, but I have been told that Aluminium anodes are good for both fresh and salt water.

I would give M G Duff a call as they know their stuff on this subject.

If your boat is steel dont use magnesium as they are too reactive, as a dual purpose use aluminium.even if its grp I wouldnt use magnesium as they probably wont last 5mins in salt water.

Aluminium is intended to give protection in fresh and salt water, although in all the years that we berthed in fresh water in Holland I never changed from zinc, with no noticeable effect. Magnesium ones will be consumed very quickly in seawater.

No you don't if you change from seawater to fresh water frequently. Aluminium is what you want. Good for both. Magnesium will be eaten too quickly by seawater. Howeverm they may be difficult to come by in th UK. Try here, click on "motor en techniek", then on "motor diversen" and you will find them.

cheers
