Annual cost of owning a boat

Many thanks for all the advice you have given. It is much appreciated. I will certainly be PM'ing some with the local knowledge of the area.

I did not consider costs for actual weekend usage as this is money that gets spent anyway - Dinners out, kids days out etc which will just be replaced by sailing weekends whether they like it or not. :D

I am starting to look at types of boats around the 15k mark so hopefully there will be something in that range that is suitable and in a good condition as I dont want to be spending time fixing things when I could be sailing. I did already think of about 5k initial cost for sundry items (charts, weather gear, safety stuff etc)

I think if I budget say £7.5k a year for running costs then there will be a kitty when things do need replacing.

I will certainly be taking a trip down to the MYC as recommended.

You sound alarmingly sensible with your approach :)

I think with your budgeting you might find you have money left over for new gadget next winter :D

That's a bit of an overestimate, Dave! I just found our invoice from MDL for this year and they charged us £2,900 for a 33 footer. You do get quite a discount for paying the full year in advance.

Hazy recollections of marina fees was £3300 for 11m paid monthly....was assuming like everything else it was more expensive these days!

As I say, it is a lot more expensive if you pay monthly. MDL give quite a discount for 12 months paid in advance and even more if you pay before the end of December the year before. If you pay by the year, you also get significant discounts on boatyard services.

That's why I'm dreading the *second* boat.

I'll want all the gadgets† I've added (spreading the cost) over the past seven years - on day one.

† Ok the most recent, an Aeropress (Yes, just buy one & never again block galley drains with coffee grinds), is pretty trivial, and can be moved to another boat, but most of the good gadgets can't.

We have a stove top espresso maker, tap the grinds out into a bin. The Aeropress is good, but it's a one cup deal, the stove top pot makes two coffees in one go.

Very disappointing test.

Doesn't everyone have a Nespresso Pixie on board these days?
