Many thanks for all the advice you have given. It is much appreciated. I will certainly be PM'ing some with the local knowledge of the area.
I did not consider costs for actual weekend usage as this is money that gets spent anyway - Dinners out, kids days out etc which will just be replaced by sailing weekends whether they like it or not.
I am starting to look at types of boats around the 15k mark so hopefully there will be something in that range that is suitable and in a good condition as I dont want to be spending time fixing things when I could be sailing. I did already think of about 5k initial cost for sundry items (charts, weather gear, safety stuff etc)
I think if I budget say £7.5k a year for running costs then there will be a kitty when things do need replacing.
