It is time to replace 8 of the little blighters underneath my steel Tahitiana32' any one out there has a cheaper outlet source for the mg duff range, a bottle is on if I get a result. I am still recovering from the over top % on previous years. Is there a world shortage of zinc, and is there a cartel on annodes as well.

There is a chap trading under the name of "C-Tek" who I have seen at a number of Boat Jumbles in the South. I think his price for the standard parallel sided, 1/2 round section, 200mm centres anode was about £10. I'm afraid I can't find contact details but I guess he may be at the Titchfield Boat Jumble this coming weekend.

It may be a stupid qestion but what is the function of an annode? My wife are preparing to buy a sailing yacht and recently someone advised us to make sure that there should be enough annodes...

The wonderfully-named, 'sacrificial' annode does exactly what it's name suggests i.e. in a very rare act of altruism, it sacrifices itself in order to save others!

In simple terms, it is a lump of zinc-based material (about the size of a gold ingot) that is bolted to the outside of the hull below the waterline. It is highly prone to corrossion via electrolosis, which means that the corrosive effects of electrolosis act almost solely on this annode in preference to the more vital metal parts of your boat that are under the water, such as propellers, rudder brackets etc.

The speed at which they corrode (and disappear) varies hugely from boat to boat - some seem to suffer terribly and go through several in a season, whilst other boats seem to take 2+ seasons to go through one!

Similarly, exactly how many you need also depends on the boat - if buying secondhand, then follow the lead of the previous owner unless the evidence suggests it was light on annodes. Your surveyor will also comment on the specifics of the boat you intend to buy.
