I'm Looking for a reliable economic anemometer for use on my power catamaran. I pay good attention to wind forecasts when I'm cruising but I never know how accurate they are so I'd like to have an anemometer to check occasionally. I see hand helds on Amazon for less than 20 quid. Any recommendations please?

I don't know anything about handhelds, but I did look at a weather station in Aldidl a few years ago, wondering if it would do the job on my sailing boat. No, IIRC, it updated its reading every minute, averaging out the gusts. That may suit you on a mobo, but it's not much use on anything with sails. Refresh rate is something I'd pay attention to at the cheaper end of things.

In the meantime, this is a free anemometer app that uses the mic on your phone. ZephyrPro Wind Speed Meter for Android - APK Download

On my phone, it maxes out at around 35 knots, but I imagine that, by the time it gets there, you already know it's too windy to be fun!

The simplest/ most economic is one of these ( A ventimeter)
Not much good a low windspeeds below say force 3 but gives a good indication at higher speeds.
You'll find them on ebay for around £10 to £15

years ago there was a self powered one by IIRC Smiths industries, gave windspeed but not direction. of course what is better is one interlinked to speed and heading to give true wind. If you find one let me know as I would like one on our mobo.
