how scary is this this.
Just completed my PB 2 on the menai straights (The Swellies )

am in the market or a 25 -30 foot used boat and would like some advice.

budget £20000

coastal pleasure craft
north wales

possible mooring

Any advice would be appreciated

Hi and welcome, and well done on taking the plunge into the fun (and expensive!!) world of boating.

Before advice can be given, you need to let us know whether you want a slow or fast boat, how far you think you'll be cruising, do you want to sleep overnight, and if so, how many of you etc etc.

Sorry only just read your Post!
Moorings on the Strait are controlled by Caernarfon Harbour Trust and Anglesey Council's Marine Dept
Decent deep water moorings around Menai Bridge (accessible from the slipway there) are a bit like dead man's shoes
Moorings further from the slipway are usually quite easy to get hold of. IE, not so much of a waiting list
The moorings just outside Dinorwic Marina , controlled by Caernarfon Harbour Trust are more frequently available but slipway access is not as good as Menai Bridge
Dinorwic Marina could accommodate a boat of the size you are thinking about. It dries to soft mud but on Neaps you have a 5 hour window either side of high water, less on Springs
Victoria dock is usually a waiting list. Nice spot though right in the centre of Caernarfon and boats in there float all the time. 3 hours either side of high water for access usually
Up the river Seiont, you would need a vessel that takes the ground
That about covers Moorings!
A 25-30 ft boat gives you all sorts of specs and types
Remember the Strait and the Irish sea generally, gives you a short sharp 'chop' many a time so a proper sea worthy boat is the way forward
Not a Fan of Sports boats with an outdrive
Very tricky to berth in a Marina environment with the wind on the bow whilst reversing in
Some have poor access to the foredeck (through the windscreen etc) not very good handrails and a slopey place to deploy an anchor!
The 'Merry Fisher Patio door jobbies' don't look very Sexy but something I would consider
My last two 'cruisers' were 22 ft and 27ft respectively. 'Semi Displacement' and I went all over the Irish sea in them
You need something that will do 16 kts min flat out so you are not stuffed by the Swellies at any time
My spec would be , if I was buying another motorboat for the Area
Roof (not canvas) shaft/ diesel
Or a 'Merry Fisher' type with an outboard.
PM Me if you see a vessel and are not sure about it. If it's in North Wales, I could look at it and advise
Standard 'K' survey fee is a bottle of Bells and 20 Bensons!!
:encouragement:

Hi All,
After six months reseach and logging on to this forum for advice I am getting nearer to viewing my first boat.

I was wondering if any of the North Wales crew are familiar of a Sealine 310 Statesman at conwy for sale ? ann their thoughts.

I would ask Richard to sea trial it if I decide to take this further.

What is the mooring charges outside the Marina ? Do you have to be a resident of Conwy ?

Caernarfon are advertising moorings in the straits on their website at the moment. Just google Caernarfon harbour trust and it is on their homepage.

The Sealine for sale, is it the one with NYB Conwy?

Port Dinorwic Marina have taken over operation of some of the Caernarfon Harbour Trustdeep water moorings off the dock and are offering a deal including winter storage and a WATER TAXI SERVICE.....

This overcomes some of the problems related to low tide access and having to use a dinghy to get to your boat.

Worth Investigating as I am reliably informed the offer is much cheaper than a berth in a Conwy Marina.

Marina contact Details

Ask for Lesley or James for details..

Move into Conwy estuary. There's room on my pontoon. Keep a fully stocked funbox, and you'll be made most welcome. We got water taxi's an all. And a view. No need to move down to pirate land. It's a ruff sort down there, not the kind you'd willingly mingle with. Just take Kwaks for example. He rammed my boat last time I was down, with his rubber duck, then threw me a birdie. No lies. What a schmuck :p

hi,
thanks and yes it is the one with NYB Conwy.

I've never really paid it a lot of attention but I think it has been up for sale for quite a while. If I'm not mistaken it is tucked away at the back of the boatyard. I'm down there either tomorrow afternoon or Wednesday so I'll see if I can locate it.

Normally you won't get a sea trial without putting a deposit down

Hi Bruce,
Conwy estuary does sound tempting and more economical financially am aiming to come to conwy half term week to have alook at a few boats in and around bangor, deganwy and conwy, thanks for the tips

I wasnt aware of the deposit being a pre requisite. I thought I would be responsible for the fuel and insurance.

Although on reflection I can understand why. Tyrekickers getting a cheap few hours afloat the b***ering off.

Thanks for the advice

hi andy i spoke ta couple of guys that do repairs to boats on the marina but they dont do thr sea line ,they think its owned by a guy who owns an engineering firm ,but they said an old boat with legs can be costly ie servicing repairs ,sorry cant be more helpful

If you are looking for a 310 S then this one seems good value

http://www.apolloduck.co.uk/display.phtml?aid=456402

Plus, while not wanting to be cruel, a very motivated seller by the sounds of things
And it diesel

Although re-reading the ad it might not be a statesman, but perhaps worth a call to check

Has The Widow moved down from Scotland? Be extremely careful it's not a scam, do not use your email address. Create an alias. imo that advert just stinks.

Hi
If I may be so bold/ rude butting in,but my boat is for sale, the very first boat I've had after completing my PB level 2
Might be worth a look,FAIRLINE SUNFURY re engined 2005, with YANMAR 315 with duo prop Bravo 3.
I'm looking at getting a bigger boat, and love her to go to a good home.
Have a look, see what you think, certainly a small amount of movement on price, but the old twin petrols are going for not much less than mine. Appolo duck website. ( can't do a link, not the good).
Lovely beginning size, easily handled, manoeuvred, and multiple trips across channel with confidence.
Thanks Rob

BruceK
Thanks for the help with the link, yes planning on taking all cushions etc back to boat soon,as long as cold weather ends, just had them all cleaned.Boat looks very odd, with them all missing, then take some pics, and edit advert.
Looking at upgrading to a Targa 33 with a pair of vp tamd41s Which I started another thread on,about what to look out for on these engines
Thanks again.
Cheers.

Well, we have "survived" 15 mostly pleasant years at Holyhead marina. The weather has been grim at times. We were one of the first boats there, with a 21 foot cuddy. Plenty of saily boat type experts with beards there to begin with , telling us we should not venture past North Stack. What a load of twaddle

The reality is that when conditions allow, the boating and coastline is astounding. I have lost count of the times we have encountered and being a source of entertainment for pods of dolphins and we even came across puffins in 2003 ( never again !) When the rest of the UK is in cloud/ rain, Holyhead and the local area is usually sunny !

hi,
Thanks for all the advice and comments so far.
I was working in Rhyl today and detoured to have alook at the channel out of conwy.
I was surprised at the narrowness.
I was there about 3.00pm and the speed of the tide amazed me.
I saw the pontoons on the estuary and the boats seemed to me quite stable.the weather wasnt too good mid afternoon.
My research continues.
this adventure is a momentus one for me and I dont want to make a massive mistake, hence the apprehension.
