My tender was delivered today. There it sat on its trailer as the salesman explained that the manuals would have to follow by post as someone had forgotten them. And what about the torn seat we asked. Ah! he would have to take that back to get it changed. Then came the question of launching it and getting it round to our berth, the kill cord was missing, OK we could live with that if they posted it on. Then came the question of the ignition key - it appeared that was missing as well. To cut a long story short I had to bung a local rib owner a tenner to give the thing a tow. Now this thing cost more than many a new car and we are expected to accept a machine that doesn't run, that hasn't been PDI'd and I am expected to pay for the tow truck to get it home. Sod the British marine industry.

My Cetrek battery charger went .) .) 's up, opened it up very simple PCB plus two transistors one rectifier. thought I'd just replace the faultly IC's , guess what they had ground out the idents on the chips. Asked golden Arrow to give me the chip ID's sorry sir no diagram it will cost £17.50 to look at it. Now for £17.50 i could make several of these boards. So I expect the cost to be somewhere near to £200 so that it is uneconomical to repair.
Wait for the reply???

I would have told him to poke it, Stop f888ink about ,pull his s***ing finger out, take it away sort it out and then bring it back when it was useable and in a saleable condition (for new that is).

How do these people expect to stay in business, is,nt it about time that these people were named so we could all see who the Arthur Daleys are of the marine industry. Bet a few people would get their act together rather sharpish when customers go elsewhere.

I want a big steel ex trawler / tug v / cheap or swap for tug

I recently bought a 30ft ex-broads hire boat from the yard that used to let it.
Five weeks into ownership BANG! the bloody engine blows up. I'd been told that diesels were indestructable, still I'll take it to the yard from whence it came. Sorry mate, was the reply. We can fix it for you but it will cost you £1000 plus.
After sales service? indeed.

Help the rest of us out then. What tender, what company and where ?

I would have told them to stick it where the sun don't shine, pronto, it's your fault, if you let them get away with it, I would have told them to take it away and bring it back when it was ready, or just tell them to keep it and get your money back, which I know is difficult. Somebody sometime has to make a stand against these cowboys!

The very fact that you appear to have accepted delivery of this obviously substandard dinghy only goes to strengthen the hand of the substandard dealer.

Why let them get away with it.

The post from the chap who likens your situation with his ex hire boat is equally galling. There is no comparison.

Surely the rules are simple if somewhat misted by what I call the Marks and Spencer factor (where you can buy something and then take it back because you have changed your mind.) We all pay for this. We all pay in lacklustre service when we accept shoddy new goods and we all pay, when we make a deal and then try and change it afterwards.

The only ones to blame for poor marine dealers are the customers who accept such low standards.

Did you pay for it before delivery?

I can understand you not refusing to accept it but perhaps you ought to get your local Trading Standards officer involved - it may speed up the process of having you united with all the missing bits?

Lousy service, I agree. I can understand you still accepting it, simply because of the time that would be wasted in re-ordering etc etc. Suggest you name the supplier here.

I saw the Aloooshun briefly on Saturday, early. Absolutely fabulous, and massive, I mean floating hotel like proportions. John, do you mind if I post a couple of digi pics (praps with B1's help?) here?

Re: What about after

I don't feel that this is a case for naming and shaming. I had had the tender on reserve for a couple of months. The young salesman had assumed that it had had its PDI and just got a couple of lads to polish it before he hitched the trailer up and delivered it. He never checked the boat himself. He has now had his arse chewed off by someone from the BMIF (or whatever they call themselves these days) and I assume by his own MD. The keys and kill cord arrived at the marina by courier yesterday. I think one young salesman has learned a lesson that will be of more benefit to future customers than by us putting the word around that an old established firm is crap.

I had spent some time and effort putting the deal together. 50hp 4 stroke and the specific tender to fit on the flybridge. Other defects emerged yesterday but they will be sorted this week.

Yep do stick a photo wherever. If you take one this w/e then the wee anchor hanging down is an old spare kedge I had in the garage. Its about 10lbs and the skipper hung it on some test chain as a wind up. I am just waiting to overhear the first person in the bar to say "have you seen the anchor on the Alyooshon - bet the prat who owns it ....... etc !"
