Anchors, Yesterday's Hero?

A friend fine got a rock wedged in his Bruce it nearly killed him trying to haul it up(no windlass). I had a CQR copy (Southwester?) and it gave me no confidence at all as it did not set well and dragged on a couple of occasions in tides that were not strong. Having bought a modern anchor, which sets immediatly I have so much confidence in it, I would never go back to a traditional type anchor.

I was told the story of a yachtmaster instructor who roared up singlehandled there under full sail, big genoa, heading straight for the bridge...

Even his colleauges had their hearts in their mouths, then he kicked the pre-prepared anchor off the sidedeck, span the 42' boat around in a ' hand-brake turn ', recovered the anchor and coolly trundled up alongside.

If I tried that I'd still be wrapped around the bridge !

I believe the technique is generally used by the ships going up-river at Fowey.

As far as I know he sailed alongside, it's not exactly a Nelsonic feat if facing the wind; if I had the balls I'd do it more often !

One tip is to grab the whole mainsheet and let in and out by hand, don't rely on the sheet purchase feeding out.
