Have cobbled together this winch to a small fishing boat, it works a charm on the 8mm chain but not so much with the rope - gets jammed straightaway so have to manually pull off drum as cranking. winch in line with bow roller and also in side view

Instructions call for 12-15mm loose lay 3 strand nylon rope which I followed to the letter, went with 12mm.

I know most people here use electric winches probably with all chain - wondered if anyone out there had similar experience

Was surprised by rope I bought, very soft! Wondering if it (ever) toughened up would it be less likely to get dragged into winch instead of peeling off as the chain does so nicely

My windlass instructions mentioned that 'soft' rope such as the platted type might not work on the chain / rope gypsy. Just wondering whether your rope being is to soft. Are you able to borrow a 'harder' rope and test ?

I had octoplait fitted by default and that jammed, nice and soft mind you.

Following the instructions “Rope used with rope/chain gipsies should be good quality, medium lay three strand nylon.” I was expecting the nylon rope to be firm, was soft as silk and yes I think the reason it jams in.

Guess what I need is some old dog of a rope.

How long before nylon rope toughens up?
