We all know we can’t stay on our boats overnight in marinas but what about anchoring overnight. We know Newtown Creek has plenty of boats staying overnight but what about other places in the Solent? Has anyone been told to move on from an overnight anchoridge or reported as a result?

A friend spent lunch in Newtown creek. He saw the police launch enter, look around and leave. He decided not to stay out overnight.

No reports of anyone being told to leave any anchorage. Common sense seems to be returning.

A friend stayed in Newtown for a night or two towards the end of May when boating was a valid excuse for staying out as long as you wanted.

The first evening, around 11:50pm, when most people were already sleeping, they had a visit from a blue-lighted boat from Lymington.

It went up and down both sides of the creek and appeared to shine a massive spotlight on boats' names - as if noting them down.

I confirmed his report using AIS data which showed RNLI Lifeboat B882 leaving from Lymington, taking a 20 minute tour of Newtown, and returning to Lymington.

Curious use of RNLI assets?

Maybe they were looking for a boat that had been reported as missing.

Maybe - but why just Newtown around midnight?

He was not able to see it was RNLI or what they were doing - only their flashing blue lights and the massive spotlight.

But yes I agree, it could have been something other than lock-down related. There was no detail for the shout on the RNLI feed.

Here in France it wasn’t only the police enforcing lockdown. There were other agencies at it, and they were usually stricter

23rd June 2020

We are delighted that, from 4 July 2020, our berth holders will be welcomed to stay overnight on their boats. We will also welcome visiting boats for overnight stays, and those enjoying the benefits of Freedom Berthing.

Following the PM's announcement this afternoon, we're also expecting to see a fuller reopening of our sites' in early July. Our lodges and parks will also open then, and be available for summer staycations.

Like many businesses, we'll be working our way through what the new Covid Secure guidelines mean, and how we'll implement 'one metre plus' where two metres isn't practical. But as you know, we've worked really hard to make sure we following all the government's regulations so far, and we know how patient you've been in helping us to keep one another safe.

With safety in mind, when we have received the full guidance we will confirm showers arrangements. Please follow the current guidelines for restricting the number of households to two and retain social distancing. We all know it's going to be challenging as, no doubt, interpretations of what's 'safe' may vary. So please be thoughtful if our marina teams need to respectfully intervene at any point.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank you all for being such an amazing community of boat owners. You'll often hear me praising our team as the best in the marina world (because it's true), but I also think we have the best family of berth holders. We've been through a really tough time together, now let's make 2020 and this season memorable for all the right reasons - with stunning sailing, staycations and a fabulous (if somewhat restricted) social life.

Best Wishes

During the last three days, boating in and around Poole Harbour has been like a bank holiday on steroids. In the 20 years we have lived here, we have never seen so many boats of all kinds out on the water at once!
And with no signs of the authorities about it did seem a bit of a free for all, with the speed / activity zones being pretty much ignored.
Plenty of rafting and partying going on.
We reckoned there were over 200 boats overnighting spread across the various anchorages.
A lot of people having fun.
(Just reporting what we saw, no judgement made or implied!!!)
