Had over an hour to kill at the weekend waiting for crew and took to wandering around the marina counting anchors. Counted all boats which were sporting an anchor from the bow (perhaps 1 in 7 kept them hidden). Good mix of power and sail and more ore less evenly divided amonst anchors except where noted

So here's what I counted at Northney

Delta 50
CQR/CQR copy 50
Bruce 32 (more usual but by no ways exclusive to Mobos)
Danforth 26
Spade 3
Supreme 1

Not looking to pick a fight...

This wandering around the marina, was it walking on the pontoons, or from the boat.
What I am getting at is.... whether the bows to boats carry different anchors to to those that moor stern to.
There could be a whole different socio-economic sub culture of anchor ownership there.

More interestingly, how many showed any signs of use, and how many stainless bruces did you spot?

Also, did you spot any with their anchors prepared on the stern rail or similar in rufty tufty liveaboard kedge go anywhere sort of thing?

Delta 30.8 %
CQR 30.8 %
Bruce 19.75 %
Danforth 16.04%
Spade 1.85 %
Supreme 0.62%

Seems very logical to me..

You've exposed my paucity of research with your fine delving questions. Yes, there were some polished Bruces about looking resplendant in the glorious weather

I failed to record the kedging preferences, but I walked every pontoon - darting down the fingers where they were moored stern to

As for signs of use, I spotted a big CQR with the most banana shaped shank I've ever seen on an otherwise immac Benny 47. He's apparently taking it down to the Med via the canals

Don't know what to make of it, but see our good friend hylas has already got a grip of the statistics

Cheers
Tom

Hi Tom,
Was the Big CQR with a banana shaped shank, a bent shank?? or would it be a Barnacle anchor??

see on: Barnacle anchor
humm if it would be a Barnacle.. this will change all the statistics.. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I was doing just the very same the other day, you missed a Manson though! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

What I thought was more interesting, and I was going to at some stage do some piccies, was the anchor to chain connectors, some were just amazingly poor or undersize!

[/ QUOTE ] Oooh! That must be the one I sold about five years ago. 30kg or so genuine. Had a 30 degree bend after an argument with an under water rock in Bayona. I saw it later with the lateral bending removed, but about 10 to 15 degrees vertical bend left in it. The new owner reckoned the angle improved its holding no end, but he did only have a 30ft boat and preferred to use only 2 x depth scope.

Forget all this 'which anchor' malarkey. Just use a couple of house bricks and a coat hanger tied to some string. Show me test results which prove that this wouldn't work.

That system may well have worked for generations of sailors, but our system uses one house brick and one cinder block to give lateral displacement at surface contact and we also use a plastic coathanger to give the necessary flotation to keep the string connection off the bottom.

Some may be interested to know that the owner of the boat with the Manson Supreme just recently changed from a Bruce. Last year in Ireland the anchor (Bruce) draged an alarming distance. It wasnt until someone in a dinghy banged on the side of their hull early in the morning did they know there was a problem!

Yes, I think I would use the word bent to describe it - but you make up your own mind!

Is this not an indication that some boatowners may choose their anchor not on it's holding credentials, but on it's ability to sit on the bow roller? Danforths are great anchors but they wont sit on a roller.

Mind you, I have has more than one winge about anchors being left on rollers, and not just because I like to walk back along the pontoon in a tired and emotional state without having to dodge anchors on stemheads pushed selfishly halfway accross the damn pontoon!
