Is there any reason why I can't drop my hook off West Wittering beach and lie there for a tide? It strikes me as the perfect summers day but SWMBO is quite sure one should not be allowed.

Have I missed something?

I don't know, it hasn't happened yet, probably wont until July or August. I have designs on very hot sunny days when its probably too still for sailing.

I don't think it is a "Not Allowed" thing ... but the shallow water and (normally) large swell put ppl off ... then you'll get the windsurfers and kiteboarders flying around (if there is any wind) ....

I did get "told off" once for landing in a Laser ... in the Sailboard launching/recovery area ... his reasoning is that it was reserved for Sailboarders ... like I was about to sail through the swimmers!! Dozy git!

Weather, wind, tide and depth permitting - you'll be fine as long as you have enough water to stay afloat and your anchor sets in the soft sand.

But - it is very shallow for a very long way and is prone to swell.

Why not try east head by the sand dunes (just inside the harbour) gets crowed though /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have a feeling that at least parts of the beach have 'swimmers only' buoyed areas, which powered boats may not use. Bognor certainly has. However, they would probably be more shallow than would be comfortable for anchoring off.

But it is open sea, and you should be ready to move out at the first sign of a change in the weather - particularly if it starts coming in onshore.

Well actually my plan wa to dry out here. Obviously it would have to be a day when we were confident in the weather forecast and were cnfident we werented going to end up three hours after drying out with a tide rushing in and drastically different weather... but on a still, hot summers day it would be devine.

On lovely sunny days West Witterings suffers considerable human invasion from the land side, and can be rather noisey not to mention kite strewn, but if you know the areas you will be familiar with this invasion. There is also usually quite a reasonable bit of surf there mainly due to it being shallow for a long way out.
