Anchoring O/Night in the Roach

Hi,

About to make our first foray from Fambridge after a trip around from S.E.Ireland. Considering anchoring o/night near the mouth of the Roach or Cliff Reach on the Crouch. Are there preferred/approved locations ?

The boat draws 1.65M, and it would not be good form to get stuck with SWMBO aboard !!??

Suggestion please.

Lots of people anchor off Cliff on the Crouch. It's OK if the wind is northish, but a bit exposed to the prevalent westerlies, holding seems OK.

The Roach is probably better. For westish winds, anchor off the groynes on the west side - we usually pick the fifth groyne, but it's not crucial. The other side, off the quay, is fine if the wind is in the east or thereabouts. Holding is good in thick gloopy mud.

Yokesfleet is best of all, but you need to pick your spot carefully to stay afloat. Off the sluice is where we usually go, but we have to admit to the odd mishap! Super holding, nice thick gloopy mud, and a soft landing if you get it wrong. Oh, and seals, avocets, etc - gorgeous spot!

Can only second Ali's comments... a very nice spot to anchor for the night.... and agree too, the west side is best generally, other than in an easterly...

It used to be even better when the George and Dragon was open on Foulness.... but sadly thats now history...

Last night calm in the Roach min depth 8feet. Shared with 2 other yachts. Need the calm after filling up with 365L of diesel !!!! Spent a happy 1/2hour removing the gloppy black Essex mud off the anchor.

Looking for other free achorages that allow 1.65M to swing safely.
