Anchoring in Sunderland Outer Harbour

if this westerly hangs in consider newton haven (low newton by the sea) cracking pub in the village and a good anchorage in a westerly. but avoid it if a swell is running or the weather may go anything E. Holy island is a great option as well.

on your way up try Craster Harbour if you can. Kippers, if you like them, direct from the curing sheds.

Love kippers!! But it'll take something special to beat Whitby's "Fortune's Kippers" which are far less salty than most.

Left the Tyne now and tried for Newton Haven as suggested, but an unpredicted easterly swell put me off and so we turned about and went in to Amble for the night, and met (I think) EdWingfield. Cheers for the beer Ed!

We're now anchored off Holy Island and with a strong wind warning from the Met Office today (which disagrees with every other forecast I look at!) I think we'll stay a few days. Remarkably the internet connect here is fantastic so I can stay and do a working week if need be. What a setting!
