Hello everyone.

We are considering spending the summer cruising in Croatia, spending as much time as possible at anchor. Can anyone give us some idea of what we can expect to be asked to pay in anchor charges for a 47ft boat?

Many thanks in advance.

In many bays, you will pay nothing, but in those with mooring buoys, you will probably be paying something in the region of 15 - 20 euros. But it will be worth checking whether the buoys are intended for boats as large as yours.

We have cruised Northern Croatia as far down as Split for the last 2 years and never had to pay to anchor and only once had to pay for a buoy, which I believe was €8 for a fifty footer.

There has been chat on the forums recently about the increase in Marina fees and the banning of anchoring.
Some information seems to have come from fact and some from hearsay.

I would think when Metabarca picks up the thread he will give you a more informed answer.

Hi! I'm surprised you've been paying only €8, but I forgot to mention that you pay something for the boat and something per person aboard. I should also have mentioned that you pay even if you use your own anchor in a bay that has buoys (Umago, for instance). But still, sure, most bays will be free.

As has been said most bays are free however some arent and you will have to pay i.e Trogir where last year we paid
£ 20 ish to anchor
However pull up after dusk and they wont be round to collect fees.
Never paid 8 euros anywhere they always ask your size underestimate it with a wry smile and they usually let you off a few quid.
On the whole thou its free just watch out if theres buoys in the harbour as they will want to charge.
we once did 3 weeks at anchor without paying that was our record
In Vis for example if your not on your boat when they come round usually around 6pm you wont have to pay but if you do get caught you are allowd into the port for water the next day with no charge the same applies to Trogir
Have a good time the sailing, architecture, people are great The food gets a bit same same after a while.
Regards
Mark

Watch out if anchoring in the national parks (there are designated anchorages) the cost per day in high season is in the hundreds of euros.

In general its a good idea is to tell anyone who asks that it is your first day at anchor somewhere then they can’t surprise you with a big fee for more than one day.

Enjoy.

We are not sure where we picked up the mooring buoy,(info in the ships log ) it was tucked away in a small bay, about 300mtrs from a village. One shop, one restaurant, maybe Kornati area. we both recall €8. We have not anchored in the National Parks so cannot comment, but we have not heard of anything to the contrary about high charges.

This will undoutably upset you sir. It has to be said that deliberatley avoiding charges is tantamount to theft. Therefore if you practice these tactics you are a criminal! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Oh yes, the Croatian restaurant stitching up! Otherwise known as the talking menu. Especially prevalent at restos with their own pontoons or mooring buoys. Even if a menu is posted outside, the enthusiastic owner will greet you "my friend", and propose a "special" menu -specially designed to stitch up the hungry sailor, who goes "yes, yes, and for dessert?", while hungry sailor's wife, too embarassed to ask "yes, but how much?", is doing rapid mental calculations of provisions aboard, since dining ashore will be out of the question for the next 5 days.
All crew (and skipper) are now briefed at the outset to never, ever order fish!

Pulled in to ulava opat at the sth end of kornati lovely place
Very nice chap took our lines and i mentioned is the lobster on tonight
Never thought another thing about till we went 4 dinner in the restaurant
Then attempted to order the steak didnt fancy the price and size of the diddy lobsters only to be told my lobster was ready and I couldnt have steak as it was already cooked
Oh says I ,Ithought it was all cooked to order no no sir its ready 4 you now
Well I want a steak says i
Then we get ignored for an hour it was only when I stood up and started shouting for the manager my steak appeared

The other place in Ulva kornat down by the national park hq looked a right dodgy lot offering cheap local drinks and a hello my friend attitude as soon as i stepped off the dinghy

Saying that thou ive sailed the entire coast line twice last summer and never got stiched up

Quite happy to be your second, though I don't believe it is correct etiquette to allow ladies to duel, so maybe you should have a champion instead?
