Anchorages

We are planning to visit Brittany from our East Coast base this summer and have worked things so we can be away 10-12 weeks,obviously we will have to keep as near as possible to our budget and from experience of sailing down the South coast to Weymouth and back home in 2004 when there were a succession of S/W gales,it seems that having to hole up in the likes of Eastbourne and Brighton would make a big hole in the finances if there was another poor weather year.I would welcome any suggestions as to anchorages,club moorings etc that could be used en route.We are a 36ft Westerly Solway,bilge keeler and will quite happily take the ground if need be.

If you end up near brighton why not go the extra few miles and sail down to shoreham. Sussex Yacht Club has a drying pontoon with visistors space (call to check availability/tides etc) right outside the club on the river Adur just before the footbridge ( turn left once inside the harbour not right through the lock). Shoreham is a good stop with train links to london and the south coast, good shops, pubs and eateries, even a great Art Deco Airport as used in Poirot and the Da Vinci Codes, a museum and walks along the river to the south downs.

On our "delivery trip" from the East Coast to the Solent last year when we brought new boat we anchored in the lee of the disused Folkstone Ro Ro terminal.

Stay out a bit to avoid the old windings and perhaps mark anchor/have a tripping line on your anchor but we had quite a settled night there.

Once in the Solent have a look at Tightwad sailer for inspiration.

Clearly loads of room in Poole (and just outside at Studland Bay)

We too avoid Marina's like the plague so you are not the only one. On last years 90 days trip to Ireland and back we never paid a penny to a Marina !
