Anchorage west of mousehole

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a place to anchor west of mousehole on the south coast of Cornwall, east of the runnel stone? If it gets windy from the wrong direction this weekend it would be nice to be able to anchor somewhere western before going round Lands End.

As there is a good ridge of high pressure building for the weekend after this next low goes by the likelihood is that there will be a good bit of north in any wind so you can tuck in to quite a few places although the swell may put you off. Lamorna would be possible and you might even find it possible off Porthcurno . . . . alternatively you could sail out west to Scilly

The distances are so small I would plump for Mousehole itself. Anchor between the island and the port (as you probably know). I have always had a quiet night there, tho the potting boats go through early of a morning.

Sounds like lamorna would be the best bet. I understand there are lots of submarine cables off porthcurno. Scilly does not really work for me as I want to get north east towards lundy.

I suspect that september will be bad for a small boat west of the lizard this year. I get the feeling that the weather has changed to something more unstable and this weekend might be nicer than a few to come. I think the smaller jib will suffice this Friday!

think you might be right.. looks like early fall and hard winter to come

A place that looked like it might have been alright was vessacks: just west of porthcurno. The chart shows a sandy sea bed and no cables but there are a few rocks you'd need to navigate around. I don't know how well it would work in practice.

The problem with lands end today was lack of wind and a sloppy sea. I averaged about 3.5 knots through the water and 5 over the ground to st Ives: not what I expected.

I'm now on a rolly mooring buoy at st Ives.
