The factory installed windlass on my catamaran has its breaker in the neg line. Why ?

I seem to remember that the BSS scheme required it that way, but why ?

Surely if the breaker were to trip it would leave all of the windlass wiring live with the remote possibility of a obscure return path to the neg terminal on the battery, which would mean that the windlass installation would not be fused.

Not sure about your specific wiring, but its generally a good idea to disconnect the negative side of the winch if its it electrical contact with the chain when not in use, otherwise if at anchor for a while the chain can act as a big anode, there is at least one confirmed instance of this happening where it caused the chain to fail whilst at anchor. That said I would personally do that with an isolator switch not the greaker so maybe not appliocable in ur case
