I have a 19 foot mirror offshore - it came with a fluke anchor that folds nice and flat on the foredeck - fine for the brilliant holding of essex mud.

I am planning on buying a plough anchor - probably from ebay. I have a lot of chain... but I would like to feel confident that I can sleep or leave the boat in reasonable safety.

any suggestions from people with similar sized boats about the weight of the anchor I need

Dylan

Hi Dylan
Your boat isn't all that heavy but does have quite a bit of windage, I would say you probably need an 8kg/20lb sort of size of anchor. Jimmy Green offers guidance here but I think the sizes are a little optimistic and would tend to go one up in many cases, hence the suggestion above.

Cheers

6 kg is the maxi size recommended by Lewmar, 4 kg should be OK.

It will be interesting to stop talking « kilo » for anchors, as holding is much more related to the anchor fluke surface area.

« New Gen » anchors are better optimized and with a much « lighter » anchor, you may have the same or even bigger surface area than with « Old Gen » anchors – For example, for a 20’ boat, we only suggest a 3 kg anchor...

Never thought I would see you starting an anchor thread! Have been impatiently waiting for next video and here you are discussing ground tackle like any other forumite! Get out sailing will you? This Nathan guy is twittering away from the North Sea and all...he'll shortly be round and coming up from behind! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

but he has broken his camera.. poor bloke... put it in a tupperware box and pulled it up a halyard. I bet there are lots of forumites with old dv camera mouldering in drawers.

Besides I am in no rush. I want to saour every mioles of our glorious coastline.
